Description
M. P. MOORE; MEASURING VESSEL SUPPORT.
APPLIGATION IILED MAR; 7, 1908.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Elvwantoz Wit" one:
MAHLON P. MOORE, OF NORTH ANSON, MAINE.
MEASURING-VESSEL, SUPPORT.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that l, MAHLON P. MOORE, a
citizen of the United States of America, and
resident of North Anson, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in .Measuring-Vessel Supports, of which the follmving is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in measuring vessel supports, or, in other words, to an adjustable shelf, support or the like designed for supporting a jug or other receptacle or container beneath the pump such as is used in grocery stores for pumping molasses, or other liquids or substances, and it has for its ob ects among'others to provide a simple, cheap and durable device designed to be supported from the hollow tube extending up from the barrel, and capable of quick and easy adjustment to accommodate jugs or. other receptacles of various heights so as to bring them into proper position to receive the molasses or other substance.
It has for a further object to provide a device of this character which shall be certain in its action, sure .to remain in place wherever adjusted, constructed to occupy but little space, readily turned upon its support so. as
to be out of the way when not in use, and holding itself in position more securely as the weight in the receptacle increases.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the nuinerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this-specification and in which Figure 1. is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the clamps for holding the rod. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3'-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail in vertical section through'a portion of the shelf. Fig. 5 is a eispective view showng a modified form 0 rod with the cooperatmg portion of the shelf or sup ort. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of the ro seen in Fig. 5. I like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the delivery pipe of a pump of any suitable or well known form of construction of which 2 is the discharge spout.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1908. Serial No. 419,808.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
3 is a rod which mayassume any desired form in cross section, being shown in Figs. 1
and 4 as substantially round, and this rod is v designed to be secured to the pipe or tube 1 parallel therewith. In the present instance, I have shown it as secured by means of two clamps, one near-each end of the rod. As the two clamps in this instance are alike in all respects, a detailed description of one will suHice for both. One of such clamps is shown detached in Fig. 2 and comprises a main portion 4 forming a little more than onehalf of a circle, one endof the metalthereof being turned at an angle, as seen in Fig. 2, to form the flange 5. The other end of the metal of the portion 4. is bent at an angle to form the flange portion 6 and the tubular portion 7, the free end of said portion 4 being formed into a flange member of the clamp. 1t is formed at one end with the flange 10 which is designed to engage and lie pamllel with the flange 8, while the other end is bent outwardly to form a flange 11 which when in use is designed to contact with and lie flat against the flange 5. The flanges 5 and 11 are provided with coincident openings to receive a bolt 12 upon which is a nut 13 by which the parts are clamped firmly together. The flange 10 is provided with an opening and through an open ng in the flange 8 and a 0 is the cooperating- 14 through which coincident o ening in the flange 6 is designed to pass a be t 16 adapt-ed to receive a nut 17 to clamp the flanges 6, S and 10 firmly together, as will be understood from Fig. 3. In practice, the clamps are put around tube or pipe 1 and the bolts 1.2 inserted and the nuts 13 screwed upthereon. The rod 3 is tubular members 7 of then placed within the clamps and then the the upper and lower the bolts 16 inserted and the nuts 17 screwed up so as to firmly clamp the flanges 6, 8. and 10 together, when the tubular members are formation may be employed if desired.-
From this main portion extends the lug or member 19 which extends u wardly at an anle therefrom and is provi ed with an openmg 20 which extents vertically when the member 19 is in a horizontal position, or
- when the shelf is in the position seen in Figs.
1 and 4, with the main [member horizontal and the member 19 inclined, the opening is out of parallel with the 'perppndicular, as
seen best in Fig. 4, so that t e upper and lower edges bind against the rod 3-, and-the"v more wei ht :u on the member 18 the more I secure be t e clutch or frictional efiect or grifnupon the rod. 1
practice, the member 19 is sleeved u on the rod 3 between the clam 's, before the latter are a plied, and the s elf or support is readily a ustable up or down, it belng only neee'esary to elevatethe ortion 18 until the o emng 20 becomes su stantially parallel. with the rod when the shelf may be moved u or down as may be required. As soon as t e hand is removed from the shelf, the latter automatically gravitates into the position seen in Fig. 4 and the shelf is clutched firmly upon the rod.
in practice, the shelf is adjusted to the proper height to accommodate the jug or receptacle 21 so as-to bring it into pro or posi- 25 a h tion to receive the mo sses or ot er substance delivered from the discharge spout 2,
as indicated by dotted lines in'Fig. 1, a funnel 22 being employed if desired. When not in use, the shelf may be swung around to one side or. the other out of the way, and may be held in such position in the same manner as it is held in osition to receive the jug..-
Ifdesire I may sometimes form the rod with a polygonal portion, as seen at 23 in Figs. 5 and 6, arranging the same at a point on the rod where the shelf will be disposed to accommodate the jugs or other receptacles of 7 its vertica adjusted position without any ;while the jug being this construction permits of the shelf being around out of the way and then low-" ered so that its opening 20 en ages over the the height most commonly used. By the empfloyment of this polygonal portion the she cannot accidentall be swung around ed.- Furthermore polygonal ortion and the she thus held in weight thereon. By reason of the member 19 extending at-an angle upward from the sipporting member of the shelf, I am ened to make the o ening 20' therethro u h with its sides paralle and vertical when t e member 19 is in a horizontal osition' andjb 'extendingthe weiglht farther rom' the clutc the biting or clutc ing pointsare dis osed so as to afford a better grip, and when t e memher-18 assumes its horizontal position the greater the weight the more secure the grip on the rod. I
- The invention is applicable to other uses than that herein illustrated,
What I claim as new 1. The combination with the delivery tube tion with a flange at one end, and at the other and formed with a flange, a tubular portion and a terminal flange, and a cooperating'member having outwardly exten mg flanges, means-passed through the flanges between the rodand tube for securely clamping said flanges and compressing the tubular portion about a rod, a rod clamped 1n said tubular'portion, and a shelf vertically adjustable on the rod and having'an angular portion with opening out of parallelism with the rod.- y 2. The combination with a tube, of a cyof a pump, of a clamp comprising a main porlindrical rod clamped thereto and havin a polyfgonal portion between its; ends, an a she having an upwardly-extending member sleeved u on said rod with its opening out of paralle ism with the'rod. and engage-
