GULTIVATOR.
Application filed October 11, 1907, Serial No. 396,995.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented Nov. 3,1908.
Renewed September 23, 1908. Serial No. 454,346.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lines NORTEN STAR- LING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Berrien and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to cultivators and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a durable cultivator of simple construction the parts of which are so assembled and arranged as to be easily and quickly adjusted as conditions of the soil or crop may require.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cultivator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the rear portion of the foot of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the rear portion of the foot of the same, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a block used on the foot of the cultivator.
The cultivator consists of the beam 1 to the rear end of which is attached the handles 2. The standard 3 depends from the beam 1 and is held in proper position with relation thereto by the brace 4. A plow point 5 is attached to the lower end of the standard 3. The said point 5 may be of any desired style or pattern. The foot 6 is pivotally attached at its forward end to the lower end of the standardS. The heel block 7 is provided in its top with a groove or depression 8 the side walls of which converge slightly toward each other at the forward end of the block. The side walls of the foot 6 at the rear end thereof diverge slightly and the said heel block 7 is adapted to slide into position upon the rear end of the foot 6 the groove 8 of the said block receiving the lower rear portion of the said foot. The bolt 9 passes transversely through the block 7 and the foot 6 and holds the said block in position upon the foot.
The lug 10 is mounted upon the upper side of the foot 6, said lug is provided at its upper forward edge with a series of notches 11 which are arranged at different distances or elevations above the foot 6. The uprights 12 are pivotally attached at their lower ends to the sides of the lug 10 and are provided at their upper ends with elongated perforations 13 which receive the bolt 14, said bolt passes transversely through the beam 1 and by adj usting the uprights 12 longitudinally the foot 6 may be pitched at any desired angle with relation to the standard 3. The block 15 is provided in its under side with a groove 16 which receives the foot 6, said block is provided at its side with the lugs 17 upon which are adjustably mounted the wings 18. Said wings are held in place upon the lugs 17 by the bolts 19 which pass transversely through the said wings and lugs 17. The outer faces of the lug 17 and the under side of the wings 18 are ridged or roughened as at 20 so that the wings 18 will be held in an adjusted position when the bolts 19 are tightened. The block 15 is provided in its top with an elongated perforation 21 which receives the bolt 22. Said bolt 22 passes transversely through the foot 6. The block 15 is located just in advance of the lug 10 and in case it should be desired to adjust the angle of the wings 18 with relation to the surface of the ground the rear edge of the block 15 may be elevated and lodged into any of the notches 11 after which the bolt 22 is tightened which will hold the parts in their adjusted position. Thus it will be seen that a cultivator is provided which possesses an adjustable foot with an adjustable block mounted thereon and wings adjustably attached to the block, by such an arrangement the parts may be secured in such relative position as to advantageously work a crop under any condition or to meet the requirements of differ ent conditions of soil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
A cultivator comprising a beam, a standard depending therefrom and being fixed with relation thereto, a plow point mounted upon the standard, a foot pivotally connected at its forward end to the standard and adapted to swing with relation thereto, uprights pivotally connected at their lower ends to the foot and adjustably connected at their upper ends to the beam, a tiltable block mounted upon the pivoted foot, means mounted upon the pivoted foot for supporting said block in tilted position and wings pivoted to the tiltable block and adapted to be adjusted upon their pivots.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES NORTEN STARLING.
