Description

J. T. EADY.
ATTACHMENT FOR ROAD MACHINES.
APPLIUATION FILED FEB. 29, 1908.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
1o I provide means ad-apted to be readily applied JOHN T. EADY, OF CARROLLTON, GEORGIA.
ATTA HM NT FOR ROAD-MACENES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application and February 29,1908. Serial No. 418,516. i
To all whom it magi concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TQEADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Can, rollton, in the county of Carroll and State of- Georgia, have invented a new and useful Attachment for RoadMachines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an attachment for road grading and scrapingxmachines.
J portions of the scraper, as clearly illusto the scraper.
openin The object of the present invention is to to the scraper ofa road machine, and capable of enabling the latter to tear down embankments at the side of a road, and 'effectually tear up gravel-1y and other hard.
ground.
' With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claimshereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing z-F igure 1 is a perspective viewof a scraper provided with an attachment, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional viewv of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3'3 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
1 designates a plurality of brackets, consisting preferably of malleable castings and mounted on a. scraper. 2 at the rear end thereof, and located at the center and'end trated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The brackets, which are sectional, are provided at their inner or front ends with laterally projecting flanges 3, which are piercedby sultable fase tening devices 4 for securing the brackets The outer or rear ends of the brackets are equipped with removable plates or sections 5, secured to the body portions of the bracket by'means of bolts 6, or other suitable fastening devices, The body portions of the brackets are bifurcated at their rear' ends to form alined horizontal 7 for the reception of a horizontally dlSPOBQd bar or member 8, whichis end lower collars 15. ings of the brackets are rectangular to consccured in the openings by the rear plates or sections 5.. I 1
The bar or member 8, which has pointed terminals 9, is adjustablelongitudinally of .the scraper 1, so as to project a greater or less dlstance from either end of the' scraper.
The projecting portion of the baror mem-- obviate the necessity of removing the embankment by pick and shovel.
tudinally of the machine and extending in advance and in rear of the proximate end of her 8 is adapted to penetrate and tear down an embankment at one sideof a road to the scraper and consisting of heavy sheet metal, or other suitable material. The guard,
which is approximately oblong, is tapered at its front end and is provided with a rectangular opening 11- to receive'the bar or member 8, which is square in cross section. The front tapered portion of the guard is provided with a chain '12, .which in-pr'actice, s designed to be secured to the front axle of the machine.- This will strengthen the connection between the frame of the machine and the excavating devices. The guard is detachable and is adapted to be transferred fromoneend of the scraper to theother.
The bar or member 8 is slidable through the openings 7- to project it'from either end of the scraper, and the said openings 7 are rectangular to conform to the configuration of the bar or member.v
In order toenable the scraper to tear up gravelly and other hard .ground, it is equipped with a plurality of vertically adustable digglng bars or teeth 13, extending below the lower edge of the scraper and provided with rectangular shanks 14, extending through vertical openings 15 of the brackets. and secured in their adjustment by upper The vertical openform to the configuration of the squared shanks 14, and the collars, which are located at the upper and lower faces of the brackets, are equipped with set screws 16 for securing them to the shanks 14. The lower engaging ends of the bars or teeth 13 are tapered and pointed, but'may be shaped in-any preferred manner to enable them to readily penetrate lot adjustable ars or teeth and the horizontal bar 8, which may be constructed ofany suit- V able material, are preferably made .of steel.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
,1. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member extending longitudinally of the scraper and arranged to' project from either end of the same for tearing down embankments, at the side of a road, and means for adjustably securing the bar or member to the scraper.
2. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member extending longitudinally of the scraper and having pointed terminals and slidably connected'with the scraper so as to project from either end thereof;
3. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member disposed longitudinally of the scraper and projecting from one end thereof for tearing down an embankmentat the side of a road, and a guard arranged at the end of the scraper from which the bar or member projects to prevent the said end of the scraper from catching in an embankment.
4. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member disposed longitudinally of the scraper and projecting from one end thereof for tearing down an embankment at the side of a road, and a guard consisting of a plate arranged at the end of the scraper from which the bar or member projects and extending ,in' advance and inrear of the I bar or member extendlng longitudinally of scraper. I
5. The combination with a scraper, of a ,bar or member disposed longitudinally ofthe scraper and projecting from one end thereof for tearing down an embankment at the side of a road, and 'a guard consisting of a plateprovided with an opening receiving the bar or member, said guard being extended in advance andin rear of the scraper.
6. The combination with a scraper, of a bar ormember disposed longitudinally of the scraper and projecting from one end thereof for tearing down an embankment at the side of aroad, a guard consisting of a plate provided with an opening receiving the bar or member, said guard being extended in advance and in rear of the scraper, and a chain connected with the frontend of the guard.
7. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member disposed longitudinally of the scraper and adapted to project there- ;from for tearing down embankments, and a plurality ofv brackets mounted on the scraper and having vertical openings, a bar or menu:
ber arranged to extend through the hori-- zontal openings andadapted to project from either end of the scraper, and vertically adjustable bars or teeth adjustably mounted in the vertical openings and projecting below the lower edge of the scraper.
9. An attachment for road scrapers comprising a plurality of brackets, a horizontal bar or member .adjustably supported bythe brackets and having terminal engaging portions, a guard carried by the bar or member, and vertically adjustable bars or teeth also mounted on the brackets. 4
10. The combination with a scraper,-of a bar or member adjustably mounted on the scraper'to project from either end thereof, and a reversible guard located at the end of the scraper from which thebar or member projects and adapted to be changed from a one end of the scraper to the other.
11. The combination with a scraper, of a bar or member adjustably mounted on the scraper to project from .either end thereof,
and a reversible guard located at the end of I the scraper from which the bar or member projects and adapted to be changed from one end of the scraper to the other, said guard being sup ortedby the bar or member.
12. The combinationwith' a scraper, of a the scraper and slidably connected therewith so as to project from either end thereof.
13. The combination with a scraper, of a plurality of spaced teeth or bars mounted on the scraper blade atthe back thereof and depending below the lower edge'of'the said scraper blade.
'14. The combination with a scraper, of a plurality of brackets secured to the scraper at the rear face thereof and spaced apart, vertically adjustable bars or teeth mounted in the brackets and depending below the lower edge of the scraper, and means for securing the bars or teeth in :their adjustment.
my own, I havehereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses' JOHN T. EADY.
Witneses:-
J. S. BARTRIGHT, H. L. Rowe.
