ELZA A. NELSON, OF SALEM TOWNSHIP, MEIGS COUNTY, OHIO.
HARNESS ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908 Application filed September 3, 1907. Serial No. 391,049.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ELZA A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Salem township, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Harness Attaclr ments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to make an improvement in the kind of device shown in the United States patent issued to Harry L. Steel No. 589,040, dated August 31, 1897, whereby strength, ease of application, and freedom from marring the vehicle are promoted.
The present invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 illustrates my attachment as applied to a harness and vehicle; Fig. 2 is a detail top view, on a larger scale, of the device in connection with a fraction of a shaft; Fig. 3 is a side View of the same; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the stop or keeper alone applied to the shaft; Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the shaft looking at the forward side of the stop or keeper.
The attachment proper is made of a single piece of wire bent at its middle to form a horizontal loop 6 with a horizontally-twisted shank 6 From the twisted shank 6 of the loop the end portions of the wire are coiled in opposite directions to form a double ring 7 standing substantially at right angles to the shank, and of a diameter ample to slide easily onto and off the vehicle shaft and under the attaching plate of the keeper secured to the shaft 12. The terminal portions of the wire are then bent horizontally forward and backward to form two open loops or hooks 8 and 8: In coiling the Wire in opposite directions to form the loops 8 and 8 the ring 7 is of greater strength than when a single coil is used and the device ren dered less liable to break or rock and wear.
The stop or keeper comprises chiefly a forwardly arranged semi-cylindrical attaching plate 9 to fit against the under side of the shaft, and a downward and forwardly inclined lug, stop or keeper member 9 against which the double ring 7 abuts.
The attaching plate 9 is provided at its inner side with a spur 9 that is driven into the under side of the shaft to prevent its movement and suitable holes for insertion of screws or nails to aid in securing the plate.
The holdback strap 10 is buckled to the rear end of the wire loop (3 and the loops or hooks 8 and 8 are engaged with the opposite parts of the billet loop 11, and hold said loop in open position for easy insertion of the shaft and for easy removal when the traces are released.
The attachment as above described forms a strong, durable and reliable hold-back attachment that may he quickly attached to any ordinary harness without any changes in it.
The peculiar form of stop forms a strong and safe bearing for the attachment and prevents chafing the wood of the shafts. The like attachment and stop will, of course, be provided at each side of the harness and shafts.
W hen the traces have been liberated from the swingletree the horse is at once free to walk out from between the shafts.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hold-back attachment for harness consisting of a wire bent to form a horizontally standing loop 6, a vertically standing double ring 7 to engage the shaft, and two separate loops for the reception of the parts of the billet loop, substantially as described.
2. A- hold back attachment for harness consisting of a wire bent to form a horizontally lying loop for the attachment of the hold back strap, a vertically standing double loop for the passage of the vehicle shaft and two horizontally lying members each adapted to receive a side portion of the billet loop.
ELZA A. NELSON.
