To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA S. .BUoKNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements vin Fare-Boxes, of a specification. I My invention relates to certain. improvements in boxes for collecting fares, particu larly upon street cars of the type in which the passenger pays the fare as he enters the car, although it will be understood that my invention can be used for collectin money and tickets for admission to places 0 amusement or to other places where such. a device can be utilized.
One object of the invention is toprovide a detachable receptacle for the money and tickets.
A further object is to provide means for locking the receptacle to the box and also when the lock is operated so that the receptacle can be detached from the box.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for opening the assage in the receptacle, through which t e money to provide means for closing the receptacle and tickets pass from the box to the receptacle, when 1t is desired interior of the box.

F is a lock secured to the drawer and the bolt f of this lock engages a keeper a on the box when rejected so'as to revent the withdrawal o the drawer un ess the lock .13 turned to: retract "the bolt.-- In the resent instance the spindle F of the lock 1s connected to or forms part of a shaft I, as shown in Fig.17, having a segment 2' provided with teeth which mesh with a rack e attached to the underside of the slide E, so that on the first movement ofthe spindle F after the key is inserted in the lock the slide is moved so as to close the slot 03, then on further movement of the spindle the bolt f of the lock is retracted, after which the receptacle D can be'withdrawn from the box A.

'some instances, as shown in Fig. 13, the
locking mechanism in the cylinder f may be connected directly to the spindle and shaft, so that the key not only actuates the'locking mechanism but turns the shaft and retracts the bolt. l
The segment 2' is mounted loosely upon the shaft I and has a slot Q7- in its hub, into which projects a' pin 2' so that there will be a certain amount of lost motion on turning the shaft. There is also a certain amount of lost motion between the spindle .F of the lock and the bolt 7 as shown in Fig. 16, so that on turning the spindle F the shaft I will be turned a given distance before the bolt 1 is moved, thus movin the slide E which will close the slot 03 be ore the bolt 7 is retracted to allow the removal of the drawer or receptacle D.
The spindle f ,of the lock has arms f which contact with projections f on the bolt when the said spindle is turned. The spindle is allowed to move a certain distancebefore it actuates the bolt giving the desired lost motion for the purpose described above.
In order to hold the slide E in the closed position, I provide a hooked extension 6 which enga es the bolt g of the lock G carried by a oor D hun at one end of the receptacle D. The lock on thedoor retains the slide in its closed position, 'reventing it from being withdrawn until t e bolt 9 is retracted, then as the bolt g is retracted it is withdrawn from-the hooked member and a spring (2 returns the slide E to its normal position, re-settin it with the slot 03' openso that when the door in the end of the drawer is closed the drawer can be pushed into the box and locked and the slide will be in position so as to allow the fare to pass from the chute into the receptacle. The spring (2 is mounted on a rod- (1 in the present instance carried by a bracket d secured to the underside of the top plate d of the receptacle, this rod passes freely througha rojection-g? on the slide E.

Many different arrangements may be designed for accomplishing the closure of the receptacle on the operation of the lock which fastens the receptacleto the box. For instance, there may be a lever and slide connection, as shown in Fig. 15, instead of the rack and segment, andthe mechanism maybe placed at one side of the receptacle so as to allow for the insertion of a-separate cash box and this cash box may be made either singly or in any number-ofcompartments, as
desired, andas fully described in the application for patent filed April 28, 1908 under Serial Number 429,698. a

It will be noticed that I have shown a spring keeper 05 attached to the front edge of the box directly above the lock of the receptacle and I have beveled the bolt of this look so that when the lock is forced into position the bolt of the lock will not yield but the spring keeper will yield and will spring in front of the bolt as soon as the receptac the receptacle in position in the box, and
means for closing the opening actuated by I the lock that secures the rece tacle to the box.
2. The combination in a are box, of a receptacle mounted in the box and having a fare receiving opening, means for closing said opening, a lock for securing the receptacle to the box, and mechanism actuated by the lock to close the opening before the locking bolt is retracted.
3. The combination in a fare box, of a removable receptacle mounted in the box having an opening for the passageof fares into the box, a lock for securing the receptacle to the box, means for closing the opening in the receptacle, and mechanism connecting -the lock mechanism withthe closing mechanism in such a way that the closing mechanism will be'actuated so as to close first the 0 enin and then retract the bolt of'the 100 to re ease the box.
4. The combination ina fare box, of a receptacle for the fares, having an opening for the passage of the fares into the box, a lock box, a door for the receptacle so that access may be had to the interior of the receptacle, a lock for the door, means-for closing the opening, and mechanism connecting said;

The combination of 'a fare box, a receptacle mounted therein, and having an opening communicating with the fare receiving opening of the box, a lock for securing the receptacle to the box, a slide for closing the opening in the'receptacle, means connecting the spindle .of the lock to said slide, the parts being so arran ed that a given,
amount of lost motion wil be vprovided so that on turning the spindle of the lock the slide will close the opening prior to the withdrawal of the bolt to release the receptacle from the box. Y y

The combination in a fare bax, of a receptacle for receiving fares, said receptacle having a slot in its upper surface, a lock for securing the receptacle to the box, a slide for closing the slot, a shaft connected to the spindle of said look, a toothed segment mounted on the shaft, said segment having a slotted hub, a pin projecting from the shaft adapted to the slotin the hub, a rack secured to the slide, and a spring tending-to keep the slide clear of the opening, the parts being so arranged that on the first movement of the lock the slide willclosethe opening in Y the box and then the bolt will be retracted so as to allow the receptacle to be removed from the box. 7. The combination in a fare box, of a receptacle for fares having an opening, aslide for closing the said opening, a lock for securing" the receptacle to the box, said lock being connected to the slide, said slide having a hooked extension, a door in the end of the box, a lock for securing the door, the bolt of the lock being recessed, to receivethe hook ofthe extension of the slide so that-when the slide .is movedso as to close'the opening in thebox the hooked extension will engage the bolt of the door lock andwill be held closed until the door lock is operated," causing the adapted to close the opening,
