To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. WELSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchell, in the county of Lawrence and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Railway-Tie, of which the following is va specification.
rIhis invention relates to composite railway ties of that character in which cushioning blocks are combined with metallic bodies, thus reducing the amount of wood necessary in the formation of the tie but retaining all of the desirable features of an all wood tie.
The object of the invention is to provide a trough-like body preferably formed of sheet metal and having combined cushioning and Supporting blocks secured therein in a simple and efficient manner, the body being so constructed as to Securely tie the blocks together and to receive a quantity of ballast so as to prevent the tie from creeping in any direction.
lith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1, 1 designate the base portions of the metallic body of the tie, said portions being located at the ends of the body and spaced apart, there being parallel upstanding Side flanges 2 integral with these base portions and constituting means for connecting them together. The upper edges of the I flanges 2 are beveled at the ends thereof as positions upon the respective base portions l. Angular recesses 6 are formed in the side portions of the upper faces of these blocks so that when the blocks are inserted into the tie body the end4 portions of the retaining flanges 4L will become seated within these recesses. The blocks are designed to project above the tie body and the outer ends thereof are beveled as shown at 7 so as to lie flush with the beveled end portions of the body. Spikes 8 are designed to be driven into the blocks through openings 9 formed in the side flanges 2 and these fastening devices coperate with the anges t to securely hold the blocks against accidental displacement. Importance is attached to the use of spikes because should the blocks become worn or otherwiserendered unfit for use they can be readily removed for the purpose of substituting new ones simply by withdrawing the spikes. It is of course to be understood that the rails are to be fastened to the blocks 5 in the usual manner and can be mounted upon the ordinary chairs or wear plates a.
Under some conditions it might `be desirable to provide reinforces for the tie and in the drawings these reinforces have been shown, although it is to be understood that it is not necessary to use them under all conditions. One means for reinforcing the tie consists of an end yoke 10 placed upon each end of the tie body and-consisting of a sheet metal yoke the sides of which are designed to lap the end portions of the flanges 2 and are beveled so as to lie flush with the beveled edges of said flanges. Openings 11 are formed in the Sides of each yoke and are designed to receive a bolt 12 which is movable downward into a transverse groove` 13 formed in the inclined face of the adjoining block 5 and also intoslots 14; registering with the ends of grooves 13 and formed in the flanges 2. Obviously a yoke or cap such as described and with a bolt extending transversely therein can be readily lowered upon the end of the tie with the bolt seated in the groove and Slots. A Spike 15 can then be driven into the end of the block 5 through an opening 16 in the middle portion of the C21v f).
'lllhe middle portion of the tie body can be reinforced by placing a spacing tube or sleeve 17 between the flanges 2 at the centers thereof and extending a tie bolt 18 through the flanges and sleeve so as to bind said flanges upon theV ends of the sleeve. Danger of the flanges buckling between the blocks 5 is thus eliminated although it is to be' under- Y stood that the flanges 4 are sufficient for this purpose under ordinary conditions.
The space between the blocks 5 is designed to receive ballast and thus prevent the tie from rocking or creeping upon the road bed. It will be seen that the device is very simple, durable, and eflicient, is cheap to manufacture, and will not expand or conbody, combined i body having spaced base portions and 1ntegral inwardly extending longitudinal retaining flanges, and cushioning blocks insertible longitudinally into the ends of the body and upon the base portions, said blocks having recesses for the Vreception of the flanges.l

A railwayv tie comprising a trough-like sheet metal bodyV having longitudinal in-y wardly extendingretaining flanges, said body having spaced bottom portions, a detachable transversely extending reinforcingv device within the body and between said portions, and removable end caps embracing and detachably connected to the ends of the tie body.
