RALPH L. MORGAN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAS-PRODUCER.
To allA whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH L. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth' of Massachusetts; have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Producers, of .which the following is a 'specifigatiom accompanied by drawings forming a part -of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a central vertical sec tional view ofthe lower portion of a gas producerembodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the fuel agitatingblades, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3, Eig. 2. y
The objects of my invention are to provide means' for agitating the mass of fuel in the gas producing chamber, whereby the ymass of `fuel is rendered homogeneous in the zone of combustion, and the formation of air iues or pipes is prevented; to regu- 4late the discharge of ashes from the gas producing chamber; to provide means for water sealing the lower end of the gas producing chamber; to control the distribution of air to the fuel; to provide means for actuating the operative parts of the mechanism and in general to increase theefiiciency of the gas producer both as relates to quantity and quality of the product; and I accomplish these objects by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
, Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes the -gas producing chamber inelosed within walls 2 and provided at its lower end with a hopper shaped extension 3 terminating in a spout 4, through which the ashes are delivered from the gas producing chamber. The inclosing walls 2 and hopper 3 are supported upon legs 5, 5, resting upon a horizontal framework 6 which is supported upon masonry 7 in which is formed an ash pit 8 haviig converging sides 9, .9. Journaled in a bearing 10 supported by the framework 6 is a hollow rotating spindle 11 carrying near its lower end an annular gear 12 in mesh with a pinion 13 upon a rotating shaft 14. Attached to the spindley 11 and above the bearing 10 is, a .water pan 15 with vits upper edge 16 some distance 'above the lower end 17 of the spout 4. Water is supplied to the pan 15, through a water pi e 18, thereby water sealing the spout 4.' T e upper end of the hollow rotat- Specification of Letters Patent. i Application :nea August 7, 1905. .serial No. 212,962.
-Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
ing spindle 11 is provided with a cone shaped cup 19, from diametrically opposite sides of which extend blades 20, 2O,A which are rotated in the direction of the arrows 21, 21, Fig. 2. Each of the blades 20, 20, consists of an Yoblique section 22 on the advancing side of the blade, and with a narrow dependl ing lip 23 on the retreating side of the blade. its the blades 2O are rotated in the direction of the arrows 21, 21, through the mass of incandescent fuel, the fuel is lifted verf tically by the oblique section 22 of the blade, and as the blade passes the fuel falls downward over the depending lip 23.
The agitationof the fuel by the revolving blades 2() breaks up any masses which may be formed by the coking of the coal, fills up any flues or pipes formed in the mass of fuel, and renders the entire mass of' fuel homogeneous, causing a' uniform. combus tion 'to be maintained t :rougliout the gas producing (chamber.
A blast of steam or air is admitted under pressure through. a pipe 2&1 to the lower end of a hollow rotating spindle 11 which is discharged to the upper end ofthe spindle through openings 25, 26. The air escaping through the openings 26 is admitted directly beneath the under side of the blades 20 which, passing radially outward, escapes into the mass of fuel around the lower edge 27-of the depending lip 23,' where it is ad- .initted into the mass of falling fuel'a's it falls over the'retreating edge of the rotating blades, thereby admitting a supply of oxygen to lthe disturbed fuel immediately at the rear of the rotating blades. By this distribution ofthe air around the edge of the depending lip 23, the combustion offuel is restored which may have been partially checked by the agitation of the blades 20, 20. 'The ashes formed by the combustion of fuel Adescends through the hopper 3 and spout 4 into the water pan v15 and, overflowing the vwater pan, descends into the ash pit 8 from the bottom or apex of which they may be removed by any convenient method, such for example, as a traveling chain or'rope 28 carrying at intervals` disks 29.
"lhe gears 12 and 13 are protected by a cover 39. The flow of ashes from the hopper 3 into the water pan15 is regulated by a telescopic sleeve 31 inclosing the spout 4 vand suspended upon chains 32 which are attached to the top of the sleeve 31 and fastened to-pins 33 by which the sleeve 31 is verticallyadjusted, being lowered to check the flow 'of ashes into the pan l5.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a combustion -chamben'of a rotating spindle coaxial with -said chamber, and a radial blade carried by v said spindle, said blade consisting of an oblique section onits advancing side and a narrow depending lip on the retreatingside of the blade.
2. In a gas producer, the combination with an ash receptacle, of a'rotating spindle extending above said ash receptacle, a blade carried by said spindle approximately at right angles thereto, said blade provided with a flange depending from the blade at an oblique angle thereto upon its forward side and a vertical depending {iange upon the rear side of said blade, and [means for rotating said spindle. Y
3. In a gas producer, the combination with a combustion chamber, of a rotating r vertical spindle extending into the zone of combustion 1n said chamber, and an .1nf verted trough shaped blade carried by said spindle approximately horizontal and transverse to said chamber, whereby the incandescent coal in said chamber'is given a vr.
tical movement as the blade rotates. 4. In a gas producer, the combination with a combustion chamber, of a hollow vertical rotating spindle extending into thev 5. In a gas producer, the combination with a combustion chambenof a rotating vertical hollow spindle extending into the zone of combustion having openlngs at its top for the escape of air,.a hood carried by said spindle arranged to cause the horizontal movement of the air from said'spindle, and an approximately horizontal blade carried by said hood and extending from its periphery transversely through the incandescent coal in said chamber.
