To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, W1LLIAM F. SCHACHT, of Goshen, in the county ofr Elkhart and Stute of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Sink-Stopples; and I hereby eclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawil s, which form partof this specification.
his invention 1s a novel stopple or stopper especially designed for use in ordinary ouse sinks wherein the outlet is customarily covered by a strainer, and is not intended ordinarily to'be closed.,
The object of the invention is to provide a reinforced rubber stopple which can be placed over the screen and will close the perorations and prevent the escape of water so that thesink can be filled with water if desired and used as a pan or tub for washing dishes, clothes and the like.
The invention is also useful as a stopple for ordinary wash-basins and tubs in houses, and as n substitute for the metallic or hard rubber stopple commonly employed.
The object of the present invention is to provide a. nonmetallic rubber disk-like stopple which shall be imperforate and which .will be flexible and reinforced in center and easilv manipulated and which can be readily mol ed complete and without any metal parts or attachments that would tend to corrode the rubber and wear the 'stopple The invention,consists in the novel construction of such sto ple, as will be fully understood from the fxzillowing description 'in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate the stopple, und the mode of making the saine. The stopple comprises a circular disk-like body portion l, having a central integral knob 2. on one side connected with the body portion by an integral stem 2".

The central portion 1b of the body, lying within the marginal portion, is stlifened. or reinforced internally by a layer of canvas, or other suitable textile material. indicated at 3 in the drawings. This canvas is enib'edded inthe rubber in the process of inaking the stopple and' extends up into the stem and head 2 as indicated in Fig. 3. so as to stiffen the stem and the head, and this canvas greatly increases the durability Vof the stopple and prevents collapse thereof under water pressure and facilitates removal of the stopple.

In making the stopple I take a piece of sheet rubber lx which may be cut into disk form if desired, and place thereon a smallerY disk of convas3", and lay thereover a. second disk of rubber 2", see Fig. 4. These are then placed in a mold, (Fig. which comprises a lower portion A, resting upon a` base B. The opposed faces of the parts A and C are recessed to correspond exactly to the exterior form of the stopplc to be produced. The lower mold preferably has a removable central part formed of two opposite similar pieces a., n. which a re recessed in their adj accnt faces. so that when the parts a arc fitted together. the recesses therein together correspond in contourto thc contour ol the knob and stclu of thc stopplc.

IP. of rubber and canvas are laid upon thc mold A and the-n thc mold l placed thcreover and collipressed thereagainst so as to VForce the cen tral portion oi' the rubber and cantas down into thc part if o1' thc mold (scc lf'ig. 5l and forni lhc knob. and whilc thc nlold'is fas lcned in this manner upon thc contained rubber. .l is subjected to sullicicnt heat to InI vulcanize the rubber; whereupon the inold may be opened and the ycomplete stopple removed.
It. will be seen .that part of the canvas isv Wil] produce a circular projection or thickening; of rubber, on the under sid ofthe stop ile, as indicated at. l in the drawings.
The stopplc thus formed. is very strong, flexible :md durable; it will form awatertight closure over vthe sink strainei',and the suction :ind pressure thereon are amply sufficient to keep the sto )ple in place.
The rubber and the stiffening fabric 3 form, when vulcanized, a practically homogeneous body, and there Wlll be no tendency of the fabric 3 to separate from or split the rubber. As no metal is employed 1n the structure ofthe stopple or embedded therein, there is nothing contained in the stopple tending to coi-rode or disintegrate it and it. being imperforate, is not liable to puncture or be torn by any inserted metallic connections, and-it is )crfectly noiseless und willv not scrape or de ece :my surface With which it comes in contact.
