To all whom it may concern: I i
Be itknown that 1, WILLIAM A. BoLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbine-Rotors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to elastic fluid turbines" and more particularly to .the rotors thereof.
Considerable difliculty has been encoun tered in turbines of the class described in 0btaining a rotor or blade-carrying drum of suitable weight which shall resist distortion due to the combination of lateral fluid pressure and centrifugal force.
The stresses due to centrifugal force are radial, and in a rotor such, for instance, as a flat disk designed to resist these stresses, a lateral fluid pressure will induce. strains that will cause the disk to dish. If the flat disk be laterally reinforcedto resist this dishing tendency, the resulting rotor will be objec: tionable in that, by the lugs or reinforcing webs, the resistance to rotation is increased, and the webs will induce disturbing currents within the turbine casing.
Rotors for turbines of the class described must be accurately balanced, because with the high rotational speed encountered, an eccentricity of the center of gravity will cause vibrations in the mounting shaft. To insure a symmetrical and perfectly balanced rotor, and also to reduce what is known as fluid friction between the motive fluid of the turbine and the rotor, it is customary to machine or finish the rotor on all its surfaces. In constructing a rotor that will admit of such machining, forms have been adopted that will readily resist the distorting tendency of lateral fluid pressure, but when subjected to the strains due to centrifugal force, a tendency is induced in them to straighten or flatten out. This distortion, as in the case of the flat disk, results in a decided lateral motion of the rim or periphery of the rotor,
which because of the necessarily small work' the production of rotors for such turbines, applicable for use in forming either the bladesupporting member or the balance-piston.
In the drawingaccompanying this applica tion and forming apart thereof, the single view is a longitudinal section of such a rotor. This rotor, which may be utilized as a balance-piston or blade-support, is formed of two distinct symmetrical and oppositely positioned disks boltedor otherwise suitably secured together. i i

Lateral fluid pressure on the web 2 will induce in that web a tendency to turn about some point of its connection with the hub 1, but this tendency will be resisted by the web 5, which by the slightest tendency toward yielding of the web 2, is thrown into compression and resisting the distorting tendency, transmits a portion of the fluid pressure to the rotary shaft through the hub 6; that is, the action of one web reinforcing the action of the other, presents a rigid resistance to the distorting tendency of the lateral fluid pressure.
As there will be a tendency in each of the disks to separate and flatten out, when they are subjected to the strains due to centrifugal force, the action of one disk in opposition to that of the other, through the bolts or screws 7, will overcome this distorting tendency, and the rims 3 and 4 will therefore be held'rigidly in place. In this construction the distorting tendency of fluid pressure in either direction is rigidly resisted and the tendency to warp or to laterally distort when subjected to the combined actions of lateral fluid pressure and centrifugal force, is overcome, and a light yet rigid construction is produced.

In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum consisting of two Z-shaped sections combined to resist lateral distortion when subjected to the actions of centrifugal force and lateral fluid pressure.
2. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two transversely connected Z-shaped cast sections.
3. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum comprising symmetrically formed and transversely-connected Z-shaped sections.
4. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum comprising two symmetrically-formed and transversely-connected Z-shaped sections.
5. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum consisting of symmetrically-formed Z-shaped sections combined to resist lateral distortion when subjected to the action of centrifugal force and lats'gral fluid pressure.
6. In elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two transversely connected Z shaped integral sections.
7. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two 2 shaped cast sections and means for combining said sections to resist distortion when subjected to the actions of centrifugal force and fluid pressure.
8. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two transversely connected Z shaped integral sections.
9. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two 2 shaped integral sections, and means for combining said sections to resist distortion when subjected to the actions of centrifugal force and. fluid pressure.
10. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of transversely connee ted Z shaped integral sections.
11. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of transversely connected Z shaped integral sections, and means for combining said sections.
12. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of two 2 shaped sections, and means for combining said sections to resist distortion.
13. In an elastic fluid turbine, a drum or cylinder consisting of Z shaped sections, and means for combining said sections to resist distortion.
