APPLIGATIION FILED MAB. 6, 1908.

THE NORRIS PETERS co, WAsHmaION, n. c.
To all whom it may concern: l l
UNITED O F 7 JonN n. DERBY AND EDwAn E BY, or GBEENSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA.
j FOLDING Boxon cna'rnggr Specification of Application filed March 6,
Be it known that we, JOH H. DERBY and EDWARD E. DERBY, citizens of the United. States of America, residing at Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes or Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein'to the accompanying drawing. 1 1
This invention relates to folding boxes and crates, and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide a novel box or crate that can be folded to occupy a comparatively small space when not containing merchandise ,sec- 0nd, to reduce the bulk of boxes'or crates during return shipment; third, to obviate the necessity of nailing or otherwise securing the lid or cover upon a box or crate; and fourth, to provide a simple, inexpensive and; durable foldin box orcrate that can be easily and quic ly'collapsed.
We obtaln the above'obj 'ects by-a structure that will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of our box or crate asset ,upfor actual use. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same withxthe lid or cover detached. Fig. 3 is an end view of a box or crate in a set up position. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of t e same; Fig. '5 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe box or crate as knocked down or in a folded position, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the same. In the accompanying drawings, 1 desi nates the bottom of the box or crate, whic is supported by transverse cleats 2 arranged at the end of said box or crates The longitudinal edges of the bottom 1 ,areprovided with a front board?) and a rear board 4, the latter being of greater height than the former. i
Hinged to the front board 3is a front wall 5 having its ends constructed to provide vertical grooves 6. Hinged to'the rear board 4 is a rear wall 7 having its ends constructed to provide vertical grooves 8. Ad'aptedto engage in the grooves 6 and8 are the ed es of end walls 9, said end walls being pivota ly connected to the bottom 1' as at 10, whereby the end wallscan be folded inwardly upon L'e a's Patent. Patented. Oct. e, 190s. 1902;. Serial No. 419,494.
To temporarily hold the walls of the box or crate, while the lid or cover is being placed thereon, we provide the ends of the front and .rear walls 5 and 7 respectively with eyelets 11, to receive double hooks 12 pivotally connected to the inner sides of the end walls 9.
The upper edge of the rear wall 7 is slotted, as at 13 and provided with eyelets 14. Connected to said eyelets by transverse rods 15 is a lid or cover 16, said lid or cover having a front fianged'edge 17 provided with a hook 18 adapted to engage in an eyelet 19, carried by the front wall 5 of a box or crate. The hook 18 is employed for maintaining the lid or cover 16 inaclosed position and to maintain said lid or cover in a folded position, we
"provide the rear board 4 with hooks 20, for.
engaging in the looped shaped ends 21, of the rods 15. V
I The front edge of the lid or cover is provided with an eyelet 22 adapted to receive the hook 18 of the lid or cover and maintain the same in a folded or collapsed position.
After the end walls 9 have been folded inwardly upon the bottom 1, the front wall 5 is foldedinwardly, and then the rear wall 7, butprior to folding the rear wall 7, the lid or cover is moved to lie parallel therewith. This is accomplished by the rods 15 sliding in theeyelets 14. After the rear wall 7 and the lid'or cover 16 has been folded, the hooks 2O and18 are placed in engagement with the loo ed shaped ends 21 of the rods 15 and the eye et 22. These hooks are adapted to firmly hold the collapsible parts of the box or cratein a folded position, while the same is being handled; 4 A novel characteristic of our invention resides in the manner inwhich the lid or cover isconnected to the rear wall 7. The rods 15 and the eyelets 14 constitute a sliding hinge, while the ends of said rods constitute means for locking the lid or cover to the rear board 20.
We reserve the right to make such structural changes in our invention as are permissible by the appended claim.
Having'now described our invention what we claim as new, is
A folding crate comprisin a bottom, a front board carried by said %ottom, a rear board carried by said bottom, a front wall hinged to said'front board and provided with slots, a rear wall hinged to said rear board, end walls pivotally connected to said botthe bottom 1, as illustrated in Fig- 5 of the. drawings. 1
tom, said front and rear wall having grooves to receive the vertical edges of said end Walls, edge of said lid or cover for maintaining said eyelets carried by said rear Wall, a lid or lid 01 cover in a closed )osition. cover, rods connected at one end to said lid or In testimony whereo we afl ix our signacover and extejiding througlh sgio} slots alfid tures in the presence of two Witnesses. 5 en a ing in sai eye ets, sai r0 s iavin t e 7 O'DEGI? end thereof looped and connecte d to %%L %D R said cover, hooks carried by said rear board,' adapted to engage in the loop shaped ends of Witnesses: said rods for maintaining said crate in a 001- J. Q. TRUXAL,
10 lapsed form, and means carried by the front D. E. DUNNINE.
