Description
N. PETERS. FHOTO-LITNDGRAPNE WASHINGTON D C gaat ontw;
CHARLES W. TODD, OF SPRING ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
Letters `Patent No. 90,971, dated June 8, 1869.
IMPRQVEMENT In FARM-GATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may conce/rn Be it knownthat I, CHARLES, W. TODD, of Spring Arbor, in the county' of Jackson, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Farm-Gates; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being Yhad to `the 'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement when nearly closed. v
Figure 2 is an elevation of the same opened.
vLike letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in farm-gates, and consists in hanging the same upon a suitable crane, so that said gate can be partially opened by sliding b ack upon .proper rollers, if required, or swung open by rotatingy partially upon the standard of the crane, as more fully hereinafter described.
A represents a gate ofthe ordinary construction, made of the usual longitudinal bars B and vertical uprights C, between which said hars'B are secured.
D is a post, firmly set in the ground, or otherwise secured, to which are fastened the' eye E and the step F. The vertical standard of the crane G passes through the eye E, and its bottom rests in the step F, thereby .securing the whole to the post D, in such a manner as to allow the gate to swing freely. Secured to the arm H of the crane, and near the vertical standard thereof', is the double support I, provided with two wheels or rollers, J, the one above and the other below the bar B'. This double support and its roller are designed not only to allow the gate to be rolled backward, but also to prevent the gate from tilting when partially open. At the outer end of said arm H is secured another support, K, provided with a wheel or roller, L, upon which rests the bar B, just back of the centre vertical uprights of the gate. By this means the gate is suspended upon the rollers and secured to the post D.
P is a projection, rigidly secured to the front end of the gate, and is designed to rest in the bottom 'of a proper opening in the post S, to sustain said front end of the gate from sagging when closed.
T is a latch, pivoted juist above the projection P, and is secured in its engagement with a suitable catch inserted in the post S, by the coil or other spring U.
The gate being constructed as above described, and in position, the operator may press upon the outer end of the latch, thereby, depressing the spring U, and
detaching the inner end of said latch from its engagement with the catch in the post S. .Then he may roll the gate backward upon the rollers J and L as far as he may desire, or, if he wishes to have the gate open sufficiently to allow a team to pass through, he may simply unlatch and swing it open in the usual way.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The crane G, provided with supports I and K, and I rollers J and L, in connection with eye E and step F, when employed for operating gates, substantially as herein set forth.
CHARLES W. TODD.
