To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDMUND MAYER and EDWARD STRAHLMANN, joint inventors, of San Diego, county of San Diego, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'l russes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description thereof.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved adjustable fastening device between the pad carrying arm of the truss and the pad in such a way, as to do away entirely with the adjustments, consisting of screws, clamping edges, springs etc. of former trusses, thus allowing the pad to turn freely around the supporting swivel or pin and adjust itself in the proper place.
In carrying out our invention we do not wish to be understood that it is confined to the details shown by the accompanying drawings. The inventive idea is broader than the particular embodiment herein presented and described, and comprises in construction and mechanism what comes within the scope of the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a truss pad, out in two on line 12 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the truss ad, dotted lines representing the spring an construction of the swivel connection. Fig. 3 shows a side and top view of a truss complete. Fig. 4 shows a side and sectional View of a truss pad with the swivel connection applied as constructed for the use of air or liquid. Fig. 5 shows a top and sectional view of a truss pad and connections, dotted lines representing some of the different positions the truss pad can be placed in and shows the parts and connections for this method of construction.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throighout the several views.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings the supporting member of the truss pad is a swiveling pin or rod D, fastened with its flattened end E to the usual truss-spring O by means of two setscrews F, said pin D, having a collar G, is carrying a trrss pad A, said pad having an oblong incision H to receive the end of the pin D, to which is attached a collar I by means of a setscrew K. Said collars I and G, attached to secure the pad A to the pin D, allow the pad to turn freely and easily around the aXis of I), thus the pad is able to adjust itself in the required proper position.
By using the oblong hole or incision, swivel and collars, this attachment can be used with success on pads filled with any liquid, substantially as shown in the drawing F ig. 4. 'l he arrangement is the same as described before, A representing the pad formed of leather, or any soft material, made tight for any liquid, the latter indicated by letter Q. B is the trussbelt, carrying on one end pad A, and secured with the other end to the pad by means of a knob L, said end of belt B consisting of a strap M provided with holes N. A second adjustment is effected by pivoting the flattened end E of pin D with a screw P to the plate 0 upon the other end of pin D which enables the pad A to be swung into and secured in position at any desired angle to the truss belt. Neither of these constructions, the belt B in connection with M, N, L, or the pivoting adjustment with parts 0, P, is, however, claimed by us as new, and our invention relates specifically to a selfadjusting truss-pad, turning freely around its supporting swivel or pin.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a pad having a rounded face and having a recess formed in the back thereof intermediate its ends, of a supporting band, a swivel rod connected to said suporting band which passes through a smooth -bore formed longitudinally in the pad and extending from one end thereof to said recess, the end of said swivel rod projecting into said recess, a fixed collar G mounted upon said rod against which the pad bears and an adjr stable collar mounted upon the inner end of the swivel rod said last named collar lying entirely within the recess substantially as shown and described whereby said head is free to turn with relation to the swivel rod when the device is in use.
