Description

' @dilated gta/wa than djie.' f
Letters Patent No. 90,913, dated June 8,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN sAsH-Locx.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
- To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOBART G. ARNOLD, of Roch ester, in the county of Monroe, and State of' New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Fastener or Lock for \Vindo\v-Sash, of which the Ifollowing is a full and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part of the specication, and to letters of reference marked thereon, and of said drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the lock, as applied to the sash, and let in even with the face of it, with the bolt extended downward and outward, showing its position when the sash is locked. Letter l represents aslot or opening-in the box for the nib A, by which the lock is Worked; notch D is intended to hold the tumbler and bolt up, so that the sash may be left unlocked atV pleasure.
Figure Here the face Vof the bon isol, showing the relative position of the different parts when the sash is locked down.
Figure 3 shows the lock reversed, also for two screws, so that it may be applied to the face of the sash or moulding when desired.
Figure 4 is a separate view of the tumbler.
Figure 5 is a lateral viewof the same.
Figure 6 is a separate view of the bolt.
Figure 7 is a lateral view-of the same.
Figure 8 is aview of the bolt and tumbler, as when the bolt is locked down, the pin n, slot B, Point or projection O, all being in the position as shown in lig. 2, so that any pressure inwardly on theouter end of the bolt drives the lower end of the tumbler down,
and point O against the end of ange R, (the latter- Figure 9. Here the tumbler is raised, so as to clear the iiange R, above referred to. (See the diiierent positions of slot B and piu n, in this and fig. 8.)
The nature of-this invention does not consist in vmaking a sash-lock, consisting of a box, bolt, and
tumbler, and so as at pleasure to lock the holt up, that being secured to me by Letters Patent, dated October l5, 1867, antedated September-17, 1867, and
reissued December 31,' 1867; neither in locking thei bolt down, as there named; but iu the particular mode or manner of locking and unlocking the bolt and tumbler down, as shown in the accompanying drawings and above explanations, whether the lock is madel with orwithout notched plate.
Anyone skilled in the art will be able to make and use my invention, by referring to the drawings and explanations as above given. v
The advantages obtained by this molde 'of locking kthe bolt down over those in my patent4 above referred to, are in the perfect harmony with which all the' parts work to produce the desired results.
In the former patent the. u'pward pressure on nib A needs to be perpendicular, or nearly so, or the tumbler will often hold in the notch, andv cause more or less inconvenience.
In this, that diculty is entirely obviated, andthe whole appears to work just as freely by the nib A as though they were not intended to be locked down; while the locking and unlocking seems to be perfect, and with no additional cost or complication whatever.
,Having thus fully described my invention and its utility,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- .ters Patent, s
Slot B, in combination withfpiu n, point O, and
flange R, or their equivalents, substantially as an improvement to my patent reissued December 3l, 1867. HOBAR'L G. ARNOLD.
Witnesses:
' E. HITCHCOCK,
H. N. ARNOLD.
