ENGINE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROSARIO J. A. PRINCE and JOSEPH N. PRINCE, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of St. Boniface, Province of Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Engine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to engines, our more particular purpose being to produce a type of engine in which a plurality of pistons are movable relatively to each other in a single cylinder, for the purpose of applying power to more than one point upon the shaft, thus eiiecting an economical use of the expansive medium, avoiding excessive lost motion, and attaining many special advantages in construction and operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a substantially central vertical section through a steam engine made in accordance with our invention, this engine being provided with a cylinder having three pistons movable relatively thereto and to each other, the engine having two connecting rods; the view further showing the various inlet and outlet ports and the slides of the engine; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing how the two sliding heads of the engine are fitted relatively to each other and are mounted in the slideways Fig. 3 is a view partly in plan and partly in horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing how the two connecting rods are pivoted, one to a sliding sleeve and the other to a sliding rod having a bearing within said sleeve, and further showing how the sliding head carried by the sliding rod is fitted relatively to the sliding head carried by the sleeve and Fig. 4 is a perspective showing the sliding rod, the sleeve encircling the same, the sliding head carried by the sliding rod, and the sliding head carried by the sleeve.
A main shaft is shown at 5 and a ily wheel mounted thereon at 6. At 7, 8 are crank disks connected together by a boxed crank pin 9. Another boxed crank pin 9L is mounted upon the crank disk 8. Connecting rods `10, 11 extend arallel with slideways 12, 13, and connecte with these slideways are spacing bolts 14 and spacing sleeves 15,;
for the pur ose of maintaining the slideways in proper a inement. A slide 16 is provided with a pin 18 held in place by a nut 17, and the connecting rod 10 is journaled upon this pin. The slide 16 is further provided with a ead 19 for the better accommodation of the pin 18 and parts immediately adjacent to the same. This head is provided with a bearing portion 17 a engaging the slideway 12, and the head contains a slot 20 (see Fig. 4). The slide 16 is provided with a groove 21 and iit` ting into the latter is a tongue 22, this tongue being integral with a sliding head 23 which is provided with a slot 24.
A pin 25 is mounted within the sliding head 23 and extends across the slot 24, the pin being held in place by a nut'26. The connecting rod 11 is journaled upon this pin. The sliding head 23 is provided with a bearing portion 26ab which engages the slideway 13 in the same manner that the bearing portion 17a engages the slideway 12. Integral with the slide 16 is a sleeve 27 and this sleeve is connected rigidly with a piston 28 which is mounted within a cylinder 29 provided with heads 30, 32. The head 30 is rovided with a central opening 31 throng which the sleeve 27 extends. The sliding head 23 is connected with a sliding rod 33 which extends through the sleeve 27.
Mounted upon the sliding rod 33 is a piston 34 secured in position by aid of a nut 35. Another piston 36 is secured upon rods 37 by aid of nuts 38. The rods 37 extend through stufling boxes 39 and are secured to the piston 28 by aid of nuts 40. The rods 37 therefore constitute a rigid connection from the piston 28 to the piston 36, these pistons and the rods 37 being movable as a unit relatively to the piston 34 and the rod 33.
The sleeve 27 terminates at one of its ends in a stuffing box 41 which encircles the sliding rod 33, An eccentric 42 (see left of Fig. 3) is mounted upon the shaft 5 and is connected by an eccentric rod 43 with a lever 44, this lever being mounted upon a stationary pin 45`secured upon the framework 46. A valve stem 47 is connected with the lever 44.
At 48 is shown a steam chest, and connected with the latter is a steam pipe 49. Mounted within the steam chest is a slide valve 50 and disposed below the latter are passages 51, 52Afor live steam and a passage 53 for exhaust steam. Oilcups are shown at 54, 55 and are provided with tubes 56, 57 for discharging oil into the passages 51, 52, and thence into the cylinder.
Our invention is used as follows: Steam being admitted into. thev steam chest 48 through the steam pipe 49, iiows alternately into the passages 51, 52, and the exhaust steamk from the cylinder. is alternately admitted through these passages to the exhaust passage 53. rFhis part of the mechanism is substantially similar to the corresponding part of an ordinary steamengine. The beavior of the steam, after passing into the cylinder, however, is different. With the parts in the position indicated in Fig. 1, steam ispassing through thev passage 51 and into the cylinder at a pointv intermediate the pistons 34, 36, these pistons being thus forced apart. The connecting rod 11 is moved to the left, andthe connecting rod 10 is moved to the right, according to Fig. 1', so as to turn the main shaft in a contraclock- Wisedirection, accordingto this figure. An instant later, however, a movement ofthe slide valve 50 uncovers the passage 52 so as to admitlive steam and covers the passage 51 soas to connect it with the exhaust passage 53. This causes the pistons 28, 34 to move apart, the piston 36, ofcourse, moving to the left. The connecting rods 10, 11 now nish their respective revolutions.
It will be noted that the sliding heads 19, 23 are not only slidable in relation to the slideways 12, 13, but are slidable relatively to each other because of the sliding of the tongue 22 in the groove 21, as will be seen from Fig. 4. By this arrangement the various. parts receiving the steam thrust are maintained at all times asnearly as practicable in proper alinement. There-can be no jumping or other form of lost motion, due to the fact that the direction of pressure fails to coincide with the direction in which the power is to be applied while being transmitted to the connecting rods. It will also be noted that owing to the sleeve 27 being .integral with the slide 16, these parts are exceedingly simple and are not likely to get out of order.
While we show our invention as applied to a steam engine, we do not limit ourselves to this articular use, as the invention may be emp oyed in connection with engines of various other kinds.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1, In an engine, the combination of a slideway, a slide engaging the same and movable relatively thereto, said slide being provided With a groove, a second slideway, a slide movable relatively to the same, said second-mentioned slideway being provided with a tongue slidably fitting into said groove of said first-mentioned slide, connecting rods journaled to said slides, a revoluble shaft, connections from said eonnecting-rodsto said shaft, acylinder, and a4 plurality of pistons mounted therein and lmovable relatively thereto, two'of said pistons being connected togethery and being further connected to one of. said slides, the other piston being connected with, the other of saidslides.
2. In an engine, the combination-of a slide having a sliding head integral therewith, said slide being provided with a groove, and said sliding head being provided with a slot, a connecting rod journaled Within said' slot, a second. sliding head movable relatively to said first-mentioned slide, said second-mentioned sliding head being provided with a tongue slidably engaging said groove, said second-mentioned sliding head being-further provided with a slot, a 'connecting rod journaled within said slot, a revoluble-member, connections from said connecting rods to said revoluble member for the purpose of turning the latter, a sleeve integral with said first-mentioned slide, a sliding rod extending through said sleeve and connected with said second-mentioned sliding head, a cylinder, pistons mounted therein and spaced rigidly in relation to each other, said pistonsbeing connected with said sleeve and adapted to move the latter, and a single piston connected with said second-mentioned sliding head and movable relatively to said first-mentioned pistons.
3. In an engine, the combination of'slideways, sliding members engaging the same and movable relatively to each other, one of said sliding members being provided with a groove of substantially semicylindrical conformity, the other of said members being provided with a tongue of substantially semicylindrical conformity, said tongue fitting into said groove, thereby enabling said sliding members to slide relatively toeach other as well as to said slideways, a plurality of pistons, connections from said pistonsto said sliding members for the purpose of actuating said sliding members, and connections from said sliding members to the mechanism to be driven.
4. In an engine, the combination of a cylinder, a steam chest, the cylinder being provided with ports communicating with said steam chest, a slide valve in said steam chest, slideways, sliding members engaging the slideways, the said members having a tongue and groove connection to permit the members to slide relatively to each other, a piston mounted within said cylinder, and disposed intermediate the said ports, a connection between the said piston and one oi' said sliding members, two other pistons mounted within said cylinder and spaced apart, said last mentioned pistons being movable as a unit relatively to said first mentioned piston and being adapted to travel in those parts oi' said cylinder intermediate the ends of the latter and the said ports, a connection between said pistons and the other sliding member, and connections between said sliding members and the mechanism to be driven.
