SAFE TY DOOR-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Application filed May 26, 1908. Serial No. 435,100.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID S. \VnLorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Door- Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locking bolts, and has for an object to provide a bolt adapted for use in connection with swinging exit doors employed in places of amusement, schools churches or the like, and to provide means whereby the bolt will automatically release the lock which ordinarily holds both doors in a closed position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above described character which will be simple in construction, durable, which may be applied to doors of ordinary construction without injury thereto, and which will automatically serve to release the door lock upon pressure against the doors.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of two swinging doors showing the application of my invention thereto, parts being in section, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in their operative position, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. l is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4L4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a door frame A provided with swinging doors B and C respectively. The door B is provided with a suitable spring controlled bolt D arranged for engagement with the door C as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The door G, at its bottom, is provided with a cut away portion 5 arranged to receive a sliding bolt 6 having a forked upper portion 7 as shown. Beneath the door C, there is shown a keeper 8 having a recess 9 formed therein and which is arranged with one of its walls at an angle as shown at 10. Outwardly of the recess 9, the keeper is beveled downwardly as shown at 11. A fixed member 12 is carried by the door G and is disposed between the forked portion of the bolt 6 and has secured thereto a helical expansion spring 18 arranged to bear normally at its lower end against the bolt 6 to hold the lower end of the bolt normally engaged in the recess 9 formed in the keeper. The bolt 6, at one side, is provided with a laterally projecting pin 1a disposed in an elongated slot 15 formed in the horizontally disposed portion 16 of an angle lever 17. The angle lever 17 is pivoted as at 18 between the walls of the cut away portion formed in the door 0, and the vertically disposed portion 19 of the lever is normally engaged with the outer end of the sliding spring pressed bolt D previously described. The lower endof the bolt 6 is preferably rounded as shown at 6 to conform to the curvature of the recess 9 formed in the keeper.
In operation, should the bolt D be engaged with the door C at the time of an emergency, it is obvious that pressure upon the door 0 will move the same in an outward direction, which movement, as will be understood, tends to move the bolt 6 in a vertical plane against the action of the spring 13, and by the construction of the bolt 6 and the keeper 8 therefor the bolt in its movement against the inclined face of the recess 9 will tend to move the angle lever whereby its vertical portion 19 will be thrown in an outward direction to carry therewith the bolt D whereby the bolt D may be disengaged in an effective manner from the door C.
It will thus be seen that a simple and effective means is provided whereby exit doors may be quickly thrown open at the time of fires or panics to prevent loss of life or injury as is common in places of amusement where doors are accidentally locked and which can be only controlled by suitable keys.
What isclaimed is 1. The combination with two swinging doors, and a spring controlled bolt carried by one of said doors for engagement with the other of said doors, of a sliding bolt carried by one of said doors, and connections between the sliding bolt and the spring controlled bolt for releasing the spring con trolled bolt upon operation of the sliding bolt.
2. The combination with two swinging doors, locking means carried by one of said doors for engagement with the other of said doors, of a sliding bolt carried by one of said doors, and means operable by the sliding bolt for releasing the locking means.
3. The combination with two swinging doors, a sliding bolt carried by one of said doors for engagement with the other of said doors, a sliding bolt, a keeper arranged to normally receive a portion of said sliding bolt, and an angle lever carried by one of the doors and pivotally connected with the sliding bolt and arranged for operation to release the first named sliding bolt.
In testimony whereof I alfiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
