DERMATOLOGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed May 1, 1907. Serial No. 371,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM LINCOLN TOLMAN, of Orange, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dermatological Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in instruments for the removal of blackheads, pimples and the like, and it has for its object the provision of means for securing a local pressure on the skin about the point to be treated in such a manner that the skin will not be cut or broken when pressure is applied.
To this end I have devised a certain form of instrument in which an opening is provided with an annular shoulder arranged and located as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Throughout the specification and drawings, like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawings, Figure 1 indicates a top view of my instrument. Fig. 2 a bottom view. Fig. 3 a side view, and Fig. 4, a sectional detail of the head.
A is a handle of suitable size and dimension, and a is a curved neck thereon connecting said handle with B, which is a circular head having an opening I) therethrough. C is a cup shaped depression in the upper side of said head about said opening I). S is a shoulder formed on the lower face of the head about the opening 5. This shoulder is provided with a rounding edge as shown at s.
In the drawing the instrument is shown as double ended having a smaller and a larger head, and the necks a of the end being bent in opposite directions and the shoulders S being oppositely disposed so that the instrument may be quickly reversed.
' In use the operation is as follows. The instrument is held by the handle with the larger or smaller head uppermost according to the size of the point to be treated and presses into the skin drawing away its looseness and opening the pore inclosed within the head of the instrument. The continued pressure in this manner relieves the surface of the skin of any lateral pressure and at the same time creates below the surface of the skin a pressure which tends to throw off any matter collected at that point. The cup shaped portion C catches and removes any such matter forced through the opening 6.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An instrument of the class described comprising a suitable handle and a head having an opening therethrough, an integral annular shoulder on the under face of the head in proximity to said opening, said opening being enlarged at the upper surface of the head to produce a cup shaped cavity.
In testimony whereof I have afiiXed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ABRAHAM L. TOLMAN.
