Description

tutes ilatent WILLIM JOHNSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN,
Letters Patent No. 90,550, dated May 25, 1869.
The Schedule eferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of Vthe same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSON, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State' of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cask-Washers; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable Ythose skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingr had to the accom-panying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section. `Similar letters of reference in each of' the figures indicate corresponding parts. 4
The object of my invention is to provide a machine for Washing barrels and casks outside and inside'. A, the bed-frame.
B B B B, standards forthe slides. O, pillow-block for the driving-shaft. D, stationary cylinder. E, hollow reciprocating cylinder-rod. F, bevel-wheel on cyliudenrod E, with a feather in its eye, fitting into the groove in cylinder-rod E.l
G, bevel-wheel ondriving-shaft, gearing into wheel F. H, driving-shaft, one end working into a rest on cylinder D, and the other supported by the pillow-block frame C.
I, ily-wheel.
K K, slides, working in the tops of standards B. L L, cross-heads. `M, pitman.
O, keeper on the top of cylinder D. P, keeper on the under side of cylinder D. p These keepers have a semicircle, fitting into a recess turned in the hub of wheel F, to hold it in gear. Q Q, barrel or task-holders, screwed on to the ends of cylinder-rod E.
R B, screws to hold the casks in place.
S S S S, springs in the holders, to steady the casks.
T, pipe to convey water to the cylinder D.
U, holes in cylinder-rod E, for the water to pass through, to be conveyed through cylinder-rod E to the bungs of the casks, and into them, for washing the inside.
' V V, branch pipe.
W W, sprinklers, through which water is thrown to .vash the outside ofthe casks.
X X, casks in the machine, to be washed.
Y, crank-pin.
Operation.
Put the casks in the machine as shown, thev ends of the hollow cylinder-rod E fitting into the bungs of the casks. v'Iuru ou the water, and it will pass into thev casks, andl also will be forced throughV the sprinklers W W on to the outside of the casks. l
The machine may be put into operation by a belt around a pulley on shaft H, or it may be operated by hand, by the crank-pin Y. As the shaft H is revolved,
the casks are given a rotary motion, and a reciproeat-- ing at the saine time, by the pitman M.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A barrel-washing machine, constructed with bedframe A, standards B B B B, cylinder 1,), cylinder-rod E, bevel-wheels F and G, driving-shaft H, slides K K', cross-heads L L, pitman M, and keepers O and P, sub stantially as described.
2. Cask-,holder Q, screw R, springs S S, operated by cylinder-rod E, substantially as described.
3. vCylinder D, pipes `T and V, sprinkler W, and hole's U, in cylinder-rod E, for the purpose of supplying water, substantially as described:
