SARAH A. TIPTON, OF PORTALES, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
ATTACHMENT FOR STOVEPIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 28, 1.908. Serial No. 418,307.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH A. TIPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portales, in the county of Roosevelt and Territory of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Stovepipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for stove pipes, and the object of the invention is to provide a drum having means whereby it is readily connected between the sections or joints of a stove pipe, said drum being provided with a suitable chamber or oven whereby food may be quickly and readily cooked by the heat provided by the products of combustion emitted through the pipe from the stove to which the pipe is attached.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide adrum for stove pipes having doors whereby access may be readily obtained to an oven or chamber within the drum, the doors being so'constructed and arranged as to provide an efi'ective shelf when the doors are opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drum adapted for attachment with the sections of-a stove pipe with a flattened top adapted for the reception of cooking utensils, such as pans, kettles and the like.
A still further object of theinvention is to provide a drum for stove pipes having a removable chamber'or oven and having one of its ends provided with a removable closure whereby the oven may be readily withdrawn from the drum or the interior of the drum cleaned from soot or other products of combustion.
With these and other objects in View the invention resides inthe novel construction of elements and their arrangement in operative combination, hereinafter fully 'described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the line '2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end eleva-- tion of the device.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the drum of my imroved attachment for stove pipes. The rum 1 is centrally provided with suitable pipe sections or nipples 2, by which it is positioned upon the sections of the stove pipe. The drum 1 is substantially cylindrical in cross section, but has its top 3 flattened, tor the reception of cooking utensils, such as frying pans, kettles or the like. The drum 1 has one its ends provided with a flange or face portion 4, having its inner ends turned inwardly to provide a bearing face 5, fora removable chamber or oven 6. The opposite end of the drum is entirely open and is adapted for the reception of a substantially annular closure 7. This closure 7 has its perimeterprovided with an inturned flange 8 adapted to enter the open end of the drum and fit snugly against the inner surface thereof and the inner edge of said closure is inturned to form a bearing flange corresponding in size and shape with the bearing flange 5 at the opposite end of the drum. The inturned flange 9 of the closure 7 provides a bearing to enter one end of the oven or chamber 6 and the opening in the center of the closure 7, which corresponds with one end of the oven, may be opened or closed by a door 10. The opening provided by the inturned bear- Patented Nov. 17,- 1908.
ing face or fian e 5 of the end l of the drum that end of the drum. Each of the doors 10 is preferably constructed of suitable sheet metal. Said doors are provided at their tops with slidin latches 11 each moimted within a suitable caring 12 on the outer face of the door. The latch 11 is provided upon its upper face with an elongated slot 13, adapted for engagement with a slotted lug 14, secured upon the closure 7 or the face 4 of the drum. The latch 11 is provided with a suitable finger 15, by which the latch may he slid within the bearing 12, when it is desired to disconnect the latch from the lug. The door 10 is provided near its lower por" tion with s aced cars 16 the ends of which are provi ed with suitable perforations adapted for the reception of suitable pintles, whereby they are pivotally connected with the arms 17 of bracket members 18, secured upon one-end of the drum and the closure 7. The arms 17 are provided with suitable offsets 19, adapted to lie normally beneath the cars 16 when the door is closed and to rovide a bearing for the cars 16 when the cor is opened, thus effectively holding the door in arsubstantially horizontal position, whereby it may serve as an efiective shelf when ope'ned/ r of resilient material whereby they will serve as an effective means for at all times keeping'" the oven properly spaced in its relation with the drum 1. The flanges and 9 also serve as an eli'ective means for retainin the [oven 6 in pro-per position within the rum. Ehe oven 6 is prcvided with a reinforcing plate 21,, positioned upon the lower outer face of the drum directly above the lower Jthimble f2, and this plate 21 is designed to serve as means for preventing the interior of the oven being over he" ted at the point where the products of combustion from the pipe directly contact with the oven and also serves as a means for prolonging the life-of the oven. The oven is also provided with aremovable shelf 22, constructed in any approved manper and of any desired construction. Apluralityof these shelves 22 may be employed if desired, andlthe flanges 5 and 9 may be provided with suitable brackets whereby the shelves may be sustained within the oven.
From the above description it will be seen that l have provided a simple, cheap and effective oven for stove pipes, one which in no wise interferes with the stove to which.
the pipes are connected, and one which effectively directs the products of combustion from the stove pipe directly around the oven chamber, thus providing means whereby great heat is imparted to the oven. It will. .be also seen that I have provided the drum with a removable oven chamber, and with a removable closure whereby free access to the interior of the drum is readily obtained,
and that I have provided the ends of the drum with substantial doors communicating with the oven chamber so arranged and connected as to provide effective shelves when the doors are opened, and that by providing the drum with a flattened top anadditional heating surface is provided for the reception of cooking utensils, such as kettles, frying pans and the like.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed,as new is: v
An attachment for stove pipes comprising a drum having one end open and the opposite end. partially closed, said partially closed end having a centralopening and an inturned; flange around said opening and forming a bearing face, a closure for the opposite end of the drum having an inturned peripheral flange to enter said end of the drum and furtherprovided with a central opening and an inturned flange around said opening and forming a bearing face, an oven chamber in the drum having its ends open and resting on the bearing faces at the ends of the drum, spacing lugs arranged between.
the oven and the drum, doors for the openings provided by the closure and the end of the drum, and means engaging the doors and drum for normally retaining said dobrs in a closed position and in a horizontal position when open. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
