Inasmuch as 518 construction and mode of operation of the Burroughs machine is so well known, only those parts concerned with my attachment or improvements need be described. For a more detailed explanation of the Burroughs machine, reference may be had to the Burroughs atents aforesaid.
As iswell known, a urroughs adding machine is provided with a keyboard having a lurality of rows of keys"291 representmg from right to left, each row representing the digits 1 to 9. These keys control a series of stop wires 270 which in turn govern the amount ofinovement or oscillation of a series of levers or sector bars 611.- These levers are hung on a main transverse shaft 600 and are operatively connected at their forward ends with sectors 610, the amount of movement of any lever bein dependent upon the value 'of the particulariey o erated 1n the row of keys corresponding to t at lever. These levers carry at their rearward ends a series of movable type plates 618, each bearing type representing two digits. After the amount has been set up on the keyboard and u on the actuation of the main operating sh t of the machine, the levers 611 corresponding to the operated rows of keys will be elevated distances corresponding to the keys operated in their respective or corresponding rows of keys, while the levers 611 corresponding to the rows of keys which have not been Q erated will be permitted to move upwaf' y a slight distanceso as to present the/zero type to its hammer.- Each of the series of levers, which correspond in number to the number of rows of'keys on the keyboard, is provided with hammer mechanism adapted to be driven a ainst any one of the movable type presentef to it, with the result that the particular characteror type whichis presented to the printing line of the platen 1599 will be impressed or rinted upon the paper passed around such p aten,

The driver is normally under a tension, by means of the spring 780, to drive its hammer rearwardly against a type plate, but is restrained against such movement by means of alatch 71?, there being as manyof these latches as there are drivers and hammers. These latches, which are pivoted upon the cross rod or shaft 700 are m turn under the control of a corresponding series of awls 718 pivoted upon the cross shaft'or ro 704.- The rearward end of each pawl 718' is springpressed towards its latch and is arranged to enga e the latter unless such rearward end is roc ed upwardly by the contact of its forward end against the inclined or cam surface a of its lever or sector bar 611. This is accomplished in a Burroughs machine inthe following manner: The series of adding wheels and their pinions 916 are mounted in a rocking frame having sideor-end plates 910, whichare arrangedto rock'upon the cross shaft 900, This frame is arranged to be operatively connected at the proper time to about the: desired rocking movements by means of the reciprocat' lever or pitinan 914 whose forward end iiiiifurcated and anailgd to .e age the rockingframe 910 in the 'usual' an well known manner. ' For the purpose of taking-a total at the will of the operator, the pitman 914 is connected with a total key 265, by means of a link 911, so that whenever such total key is-depressed the pitman 914 is shifted to a position so that on its forward stroke and the forward stroke of the handle, it will have no-efiect upon the rocking frame of the adding wheel pinions,
which will consequently remain in mesh with their sectors durin the forward movement of e, at which time'the sectors descend distances corresponding to the total or accumulation represented by the-adding wheels, but such pinions .be removed from mesh with their sectors upon the return movement-of-the operatin handle in case a grand total is taken, with t e result that the adding wheels and pinions will be re-set to zero and ,the machine will .be cleared. If, however, a sub-total is to be taken the total key is released at the end of the forward stroke of the operatin handle, which operation will permit the a wheel pinions to remain in mesh -with 16117866170128 and the end sub-total, which has been rolled off or transferred from the pinions, will be rolled back upon the latter.
