-Beit known that I, CHAnLEs B. LYLE, citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Magnolia, in the county of Columbia and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstand-Covers, of which the following is a specification. l

This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in inkstands and the object of the invention is an improved cover which is designed to render the inkstand air-tight and at the same time permit the ink to be instantly accessible to the pen, the` inkstand being open but momentarily when the pen is inserted. Anda further object of the invention isa device of'this character which excludes the dust and motes that are constantly falling into open inkstands and also revents the evaporation of the ink.

With t ese and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter fullydescribe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accom-v panying drawing, in Which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cover applied to an inkstand. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View taken on the line y-'y of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line x-x of Fig. 2.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated 'in all the-views o the drawingby the same the bottom of the body portion and commu-l nicates with the mouth of the ink stand, to constitute a valve seat 4 for a ball valve 5 mountedin such valve chamber. This ball* valve 5 normally rests on its valve seat 4, and closes the same air-tight. The body portion 1 is formed in its front with a depression and a dip-hole 6 extending therefrom and leading inwardly and downwardly toward and into communication with the valve seat 4.

In order to lpermit the insertion of the ball .valve into the valve chamber, the upper end of said valve chamber extends through the back of the body portion, and is formed in its walls with threads arranged for engagement by a screw cap 8 to detachably secure the same to the body portion, the valve chamber extending in the same direction throughout its'length, so as to prevent the possibility of the ball valve becoming lodged in the valve chamber above its valve seat, and also to permit the valve chamber to be more conveniently and effectually cleaned.

From the above description in connection with the accompanyin drawing, it is evident that this is all accomp 'shedwithout any additional trouble'to the user, in short there is no cap to take 0E, no lid to put on, yet the stand is always closed but ready for immediate use.

Having thus described the invention, what Iclaim is:
