Description
Cri
JULIUS J. DRAWE, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
STOCK-SAMPLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 1908.
Application filed July 5, 1907. Serial No. 382,278.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULiUs J. DRAWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock Samplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f
This invention relates to improvements in .devices for sampling stock where it is desired to get a true sample of the contents of a tank or vat for its full depth, and while the present invention may be used in other relations, it is particularly designed for use as a soap stock sampler.
Broadly speaking, the invention consists of a suitably shaped box member, which, for illustration, may be shown in the form of a trough open at both ends and along 'one side,
the same cooperating with a longitudinal slide to close the open side, with a flexible gate carried by said slide adapted to be forced beneath the contents of the box or trough to close the lower end of the trough, and thus retain the contents therein when the same is withdrawn from the vat or tank.
W'hile the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of disclosure, reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention, in which like letters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Fi ure 1 is a front elevation of the trough mem ei' showing the slide and the flexible gate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing the slide elevated with the gate in its open position, the view being shown broken away at the upper end. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
' Fig. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the lower end of the trough member showing the slide in its lowermost position with the flexible gate in its closed position, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the rear wall of the trough showing a handle applied thereto for manipulating the trough member.
For the purpose of brevity, the term Htrough member is 'intended to cover any suitably shaped box or casing open at one side, and in the drawings this is illustrated at l, as a rectangular elongated member,
preferably of metal open along one side, and the walls adjacent said open side terminating in a bent-over portion 2, forming longitudinal guideways for a slide 3, preferably of metal, and longitudinally corrugated, as shown more clearly at 4, Fig. 3, the corrugations being intended to form a lateral truss for the metallic slide to give it more rigidity and stiffness. This slide 3, at its edges, terminates in bent-over portions 5, adapted to cooperate with the longitudinal guideways 2 forming a sliding connection therewith.
6 designates bands o1' strips passing around the body of the trough and over the slide for the purpose of retaining the parts rigidly in posltion to allow the device to be properly handled.
The side walls of the lower end of the trough member are cut away and curved downwardly, as at 6, and suitable internal guideways are formed around these curved edges. In the drawings, these guideways are illustrated as comprising the inturned flanges 7.
At the lower end of the slide 3 there is secured in any suitable manner a flexible gate 3, preferably of metal, which gate cooperates with the flanges 7 upon a downward movement of the slide to flex the said gate into a curve, and thereby close the lower opening of the trough. The upper end of the slide may be provided with a handle 9, and similarly a handle 10, Fig. 5, may be attached to the rear wall of the trough 1.
Preferably at the upper end of the trough there is pivoted a lever 1 1. This lever is provided with an elongated slot 12, coperating with a pin 13 on the slide, so that the movements of the lever will operate the slide in op osite directions.
n operation, it will be seen that the device is forced or dropped through the soap stock or other contents of a vat, vessel or tank in its open position, as shown in Fig. 2. Vhen the bottom of the vessel is reached, the lever 11 is thrown down, forcing the slide 3 downwardly, and the slide 3 similarly forces the flexible gate 8, in engagement with the flanges 7, around the flanges, iexing the gatein a curve, and closing the bottom opening of the trough member, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. The device being now withdrawn an accurate sample of the contents of the vessel may be procured. If the matter is too solid and will not flow or slip out of the bottom of the device after it has been withdrawn from the tank and the slide moved tol open the gate, then the lever ll may be thrown off the pin 13 and the whole slide withdrawn, the guideways 2 being suitably formed in bending to allow of the passage of the flexible gate 8 therethrough, thus exposing the full contents and giving a perfect visible sam le of the stock.
TNhat I c aim is zl. The combination with a trough shaped member having an open lower end and an open side, a longitudinal slide for said open side, and means carried at the lower end of said slide for closing the lower end 0f said trough comprising a flexible gate, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a trough shaped member open at its lower end and having an open side, a slide for said open side, a flexible gate carried by said slide and operating to close said lower end, and a lever pivoted to said trough and engaging said slide to operate same longitudinally of said trough, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a trough provided with an open side extending longitudinally thereof and its sides terminating at their lower end in a downward curve, guiding means adjacent the curved opening at the lower end of said trough, a longitudinal slide for closing said open side, and a gate of flexible metal carried at the lower end of said slide and cooperating with said guiding formed of metal, open at its lower end and also open on one side, the walls of said trough adjacent said open side terminating in bent over portions forming internal guideways, and said side walls terminating at their lower ends inilanged downwardly-curved portions, a metallic longitudinally-corrugated slide provided withl bent-over portions coperat- Ving with said internal guideways, a gate of flexible metallic gate carried by said slide and cooperating with said curved guideways to control the opening at lsaid lower end, bands encircling said trough and slide to hold said device rigidly assembled, a pin carried by said slide, a lever secured to said trough member and provided with an elongated slot engaging said pin, a handle for said slide, and a handle for said trough, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, l affixmy signature, in presence of two witnesses. i
