BOILER-CLEANER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn own that we, OLIVER S. PLATT and LIDA A. PLATT, citizens of the United States, residing at Casey, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler and Flue Cleaners for Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has relation to new and useful improvements in devices for cleaning steam boilers of any adherent material, or incrustation collected therein. I'Ieretofore many different constructions have been devised and employed to accomplish this end, but they have all, so far as we are aware, proved objectionable, because of the fact that they are cumbersome to install and difficult to operate, and in many cases, if power other than manual were used, the installation, shafting, pulleys and other means necessary for power transmission would make .these devices complicated and expensive, which should be avoided. The devices now employed generally have parts such as knives or blades, to scrape the mud or adherent material from the boilers. This necessitates the withdrawal of the fire, the cooling of the boiler and, in cleaning, the presence of a man in the boiler. These objectionable features may be readily overcome by the use of our invention, since we have found by experience that by using the same, the mud or other material collected in the boiler may be removed in a very short space of time, with but little labor and without the necessity of stopping the engine.
With these ends in view our invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as set forth in the specification and claims hereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several views :The figure is a side elevation of our improved steam boiler cleaner.
Our invention is described as follows In describing our invention we shall designate the left hand end of the pipe, shown in the drawings, as the inner end, and the right hand end of the pipe as the outer end.
' The numeral 1, re resents our invention, which consists of a ho low, perforated pipe 2, having screwed on its inner end a shoe 3, the purpose of which will be hereinafter shown.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 1908.
Renewed May 7, 1908. Serial No. 431,335.
Said pipe 2, is provided at its outer end with a thread 4, on which are screwed two corresponding nuts 5, and between said nuts are fitted two transversely perforated washers 6. An L joint 7, having an internal thread in one end, is also screwed on the outer end of said pipe 2. Said L joint is also provided at its opposite end with an exterior thread, by means of which it is screwed in the inner threaded end of a corresponding L joint 8. The numeral 9, represents a globe, or other construction of valve which is screwed on the free exterior threaded end of said last mentioned L joint 8, at its inner end. Said valve is provided with a pipe 13, at its opposite end. Said pipe 2, is of such a length, in respect to the length of the boiler in which it is placed, as to terminate about two feet from the end of said boiler, opposite the end adjacent to said valve. To secure the pipe 2, in the boiler, a perforation of suflicient dimensions is bored in said boiler, about four inches from its bottom. The inner end of said pipe is then passed through said perforation into the boiler, and is removably secured in position therein by placing one of said washers against the inner wall of said boiler, and the other against the outer wall thereof, and tightly clamping said wall between said washers by means of said nuts. The too 3 of the shoe is turned down and rests on the bottom floor of the boiler; said shoe is just long enough to hold said pipe on a line parallel with the floor of said boiler. As the mud and sediment of a boiler is always precipitated to its bottom, it will be apparent that said pipe 2, will be right in the midst of this precipitation.
When wishing to clean the boiler we open the valve 9, when the pressure of the water on the perforated pipe 2, will carry the water, mud and sediment in the boiler throughsaid pi e and out of the boiler and through the va ve 9. The said pipe is made hollow so as to produce a suction through it, which will suck up the mud or other sediment in the boiler, through its perforation, its entire length. At no time, except when said valve is open, will our device have any effect on the steam or water in the boiler.
After the mud leaves the boiler it may be conducted to any place to suit the desire or convenience of the engineer or proprietor.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z 1. In a device for cleaning steam boilers the combination with the blow-0E pipe of a shoe screwed on the inner end of said pipe, said pipe passed through a perforation in the end wall of the boiler and secured by washers, and nuts, the toe of said shoe turned down in position to hold said pipe on a line parallel to the bottom of said boiler, the outer end of said pi e provided With conducting pipes, and a Va ve, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device for cleaningsteam boilers,
15 the combination with the blow-off pipe of a shoe screwed on the inner end of said pipe, said pipe passed through a perforation in the end wall of the boiler and secured in place, the toe of said shoe turned down in position to hold said pipe on a line parallel .to the bottom of said boiler, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
