Be it known that I, NICHOLAS SoHL, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Binding-Post, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
I This invention relates to binding posts adapted to be used with electric wires and to afiolrl'd a firm and positive connection therewit Although ada ted for general use it is especially designe to be used where vibrations or jars would loosen or disturb the screws, bolts or nuts ordinarily employed.
Other objects relating to the specific construction and special arrangement of the arts will be understood from the follow- 1ng descri tion and accompanying drawings which em ody my invention in its referred form, and-in which drawings like 0 aracters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a binding post embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of a modified construction of means for binding and insulating a ,ost on its support; Fig. 4 is a plain of the end binding ost shown in ig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a plan of t e base shown in said figure.
As illustrated in the drawings, the binding post is mounted upon a bed plate 1 having a ed of non-conducting material 2 adapted to support and insulate the base 3 of the binding post supported thereon. The outer end 4 of the binding 0st and the corresponding end of the bed 0 non-conducting material 3' may be ofi-set from the body portion thereof so as to bear against the outer edge of the base plate 1 and hold said post against rotary movement thereon. A spring 5 extends upward from the base 3 of the post and is rovided with an arm 6 having binding ri s 7 ada ted to bar against a wire .8 and hold sai' wire in engagement with angular or notched portions 9 of the curved bearing edges of apertures 10 formed in the sides of ears 11 whlch ears extend vertically from the sides'of the base 3 and preferabl integral therewith. The apertures 10 of the ears 11 are larger than the cross section of the wire of the designed to be held therein, and the angular portions 9 of said apertures are so positioned relatively: to the springa ctuated arm- 6 .that the normal u Ward tension of said arm leads or conducts t e wire 8 into the angular portions of said apertures and holds said wire firmly in position. And to this end the arm 6 is preferably inclined, so that as the arm springs upward it will press the wire into the angular ortions of the apertures automatical y. he base 3 of the post is secured to the bed plate 1 by means of a screw 12 insulated from the base 1 by means of a sleeve 13 of non-conducting material.
Other means than the off-set end 4 of the base 3 of the binding post may, if desired, be employed without departing from my invention. Thus, the bed plate 1 may be provided with a conical aperture 14 having recesses 15 formed in the inclined wall 16 of said a erture and spaced evenly from each 0t er, adapted to register with corresponding rojectlons 17 formed on the bottom of the ase 3 of the binding post, by means of which an intermediate washer 18 of insulating material may be de ressed into the recesses 15 of the base 1 an hold the base of the binding post against rotation on its sup ort. When such construction is used, the inding post may be secured to the base plate by means of a screw 19 extending through the aperture 14 of the base, and an aperture 20 formed in the binding post. An insulatingwasher 21 may head of t e screw 19 or washer 22 connected therewith. By means of such construction,-
the wire 8 is firrnl and positively held within the'ears of the binding post, and may be readily attached thereto and removed therefrom, when desired. The notched portions 9 of the ears 11 of the bindin post are well adapted to receive and hold equally well wires of various diameters and clamp the wire more firmly and ositively than can be done by a rounded earing surface. The construction and arrangement of the arms of the spring 5 relatively to the ears 11' and the apertures formed therein, is such that the normal tendency of the arms 6 is to carry a wire across the curved bearing edges and into the notches 9 of the ears 11, thereb auto matically seating a wire in said note es and holding 1t there.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A binding post, comprising a base-plate having oppositely disposed ears provided with apertures having curved bearing edges provided with notches, and a sprin -actuated arm arranged between said ears and provided with offset edges adapted to conduct a wire automatically into the notched portions of said ears and hold the wire therein.
2. In a binding post, a bed-plate provided with a conical aperture having recesses formed in the wall of said aperture, a base provided with projections adapted to register with the recesses of said bed-plate, a washer of insulating material arranged between said base and bed-plate, and a fastening device extending through the a erture of the bed-plate so as to clamp the ed-plate and base-plate firmly together.
