ATTOR N EY UNITED STATE SEEEN T OFFICE.
AUGUST J. R. MARJENHOFF, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
RAIL CLEANING AND SCRAPING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. R. h'lARJEN- HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, county of Charleston, and State of South Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rail Cleaning and Scraping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in rail cleaning and scraping device, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character by means of which rails on which a car of any character runs may be scraped and cleaned, the invention being exceedingly useful in winter time when snow and water are frozen upon the tracks and endanger the passage of the car over said rails.
My device may be easily and quickly actuated by the motorman or operator of the car to remove any foreign surfaces or ingredients from the rails, thereby preventing the wheels of the car from sliding and insuring perfect electrical connection between therails andwheels of said car.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improvement, showing the same upon one end of the car. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 3, is a sectional view of the actuating mechanism.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the body of a car to which is fastened the depending brackets B by means of the bolts O, to this said depending bracket is pivoted the rocking levers D and D at the points E and E and the said rocking levers are connected to the rod 1) by means of the short levers G and G, the said rod being connected to the scraper arms F and F. To one end of the scraper arms are attached the scrapers II and H of any desired shape or form by means of the small bolts I, the said scrapers being made to slide along on the top of the rails at an angle to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 11, 1907.
Patented June 80, 1908.
Serial No. 406,050.
prevent scrapers from catching in rail joints and for the purpose of throwing dirt and other matter clear of rails and they also have small extensions adapted to lit on the inside of rail edge or in the grooves of the rails where such is necessary. The opposite end of the scraper arms are pivoted to the depending brackets J and J which are fastened to the bottom of the car by means of the bolts K.
One end of each of the rocking levers is attached to the rod L, which passes through the .[loor of the car and the tubular casing M and is fastened into the sliding head N against which one end of the spring 0 rests, the opposite end resting upon the floor of the car. Through the said rod L is fastened a pin L which extends through the L shaped slots M, cut in opposite sides of the casing M. The cap P having an opening cut in the top thereof for the insertion of the detachable handle Q is threaded upon the casing M.
In practice when the scraper is being used the spring 0 presses the head N upward and the rod L being fastened to the said head must also be forced upward, thus holding one end of the rocker arm up and the opposite end down, which presses the scraper upon the track through the medium of the small levers G and G and the scraper arms F and F, thus all foreign substances which are on the track will be thrown aside.
hen it is desired that the scrapers be taken out of engagement with the tracks, the detachable handle Q if pressed downward until the pins L have passed the full length of the L shaped slot M when the handle will be slightly turned thus placing the pins in' the lower portion of the said slots M, thus will one end of the rocking levers be moved downward and the opposite end upward until the scrapers are lifted from the track.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In combination with a car, a depending bracket, a rocking lever, a scraper arm, a short lever connecting one end of the rocking lever to the scraper arm, a second depending bracket to which is attached one end of the scraper arm, a scraper attached to the opposite end of the last named member, a casing, having an L shaped slot cut in opposite sides thereof, a cap having an opening cut therein threaded upon said casing, a sliding head, a rod attached thereto passing through the floor of the car and attached to one end of the rocking levers, a extending throughnope. posite sides of s idin vheadand :fastening. same to rod, a spring p aced inside of the casing one end of which bears against the floor of the car theother end against the sliding head-holdingitin. an upward. osition; and a detachable handle, as specifie 2. The herein described combination of a" track cleaner and scraper, having a scraper' arm;one end of XVhiCh -lS attached toa'de endingzbracket; axscraper =fastenedto the oWer end of the scraper arm 'rocking levers one end-of each of which isattachedto-the scraper by meansuof short levers, a rod attached to the opposite end of'the rockingzlevers, a casing, a slidin head placed therein to Which is attachedsaid' rodva: spring also Within the casing, as and for the purpose set forth.
Inttestimony whereof, I have hereunto af-v' fixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
AUGUST J, R. MARJENHOFF.
