RULE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Tune 30, 1908.
Application filed September 13, 1907. Serial No. 392,752.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST J. EsrnLnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Rule-Holders, of which the fo lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to rule holders and particularly contemplates the provision of a metallic clip of improved construction which will be simple, easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
My invention further resides in the following features of construction and arrangement as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the several figures, and in which Figure 1 is a erspective front view of my improved clip, *ig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same and Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view therethrough illustrating its attachment to the cloth of the pocket or the like and 1 showing a rule securely held therein from removal.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I provide a clip for holding rules and the like comprising a rear plate 1 constituting the body of the clip and formed with lateral wings at its upper end bent forwardly to form the side pieces 2 of the rule holding the frame, said wings being of suflicient length to allow the ends 3 of the same to be bent together at right angles from said side pieces 2, meeting at a point separately between said side pieces 2 and spaced from said rear plate 1 to form the rule holding frame. The upper ed es of said rule holding frame are preferab y split for a short distance and the upper portions of the side pieces 2 and rear plate 1 are slightly flared to provide for a more ready guidance of the rule or the like therethrough. The ends 2 being thus joined are secured from displacement by a spring tongue 4 extending downwardly therefrom against the rear or body plate 1, said spring tongue 4 being secured upon the entire face of the ends 3 forming the front piece of the rule holding frame, and being connected thereto by rivets 5 extending therefrom and through each of the ends 3. Thus a rule such as designated by A in Fig. 3 will, upon being projected downwardly through the rule holding frame composed of side pieces 2 and the bent ends 3, be clasped between the rear body plate 1 and spring ton ue 4 and will be securely held,
from accidenta displacement.
The rear or body plate 1 is further provided with flanges 6 extending upon its lower ed e and its side ed es below the wings previously described, said flan es 6 being curled upon the rear face of said plate 1, about and securely holding therein a Ushaped stiff wire frame 7 having its upper ends 8 bent back thereon and providing between said ends 8 a horizontal piece 9 s aced away from the rear face of the body pate 1 and forming a pivot bar upon whici the L-shaped clasp 10 swings. The clasp 10 is provided with split sections 11 bent about said pivot bar 9 to securely hold the same thereon, and comprises a serrated piece 12 adapted to lie angularly against the rear face of the body late 1 when the thumb plate 13 is moved t iereagainst, said thumb plate 13 being curved outwardly upon its outward edge to be readily )ullcd outwardly from the body plate 1 by t 1c insertion of the operators finger nail thereunder and said serrated plate 12 being adapted to engage the cloth of a pocket or other portion of a garment indicated at B in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a rule holding clip of the character described, the combination of a body plate having integral wings formed at its upper end and bent forwardly and together with their ends adjacent one another to form a rule holding and guiding frame, a s )ring tongue extending against said body pfate and connected within said rule holding frame to the end of both of said wings in such manner as to secure said wings from displacement, and a clasp formed rearwardly of said body plate for attachment to a suitable oortion of a garment, substantially as descri )cd.
2. In a rule holding clip of the character described, the combination of a body plate having integral wings formed at its upper end and bent forwardly and together to form arule holding and guiding frame, a spring tongue secured within said frame and extending against said body plate, said body. plate having flanges formed u on itslower edge and said edges below saifl wings and curled upon its rear face about and securely holding therein a U-shaped stiff wire frame having its upper ends bent rearwardly upon the same and connected by a transverse iece s aeed away from the rear face of the ody plate and forming a pivot bar for a clasp member mounted thereon and bearing against said body plate and cooperating therewith to secure the clip upon a suitable portion of a garment, substantially as described.
3. In a rule holding clip, of the character described, the combination of a body plate having integral wings formed thereon at its upper end and bent forwardly and together to form a rule holding and guiding frame, a s ring tongue extending against said body p ate and secured within said frame in such manner as to connect and hold the ends of said wings from dis lacement, said body having flanges formec u on its lower edge and side edges below sai wings, said flanges I being curled upon the rear face of said body plate, about and securely holding therein a U-shaped stiff wire frame having its u per ends bent back thereon and connected y a transverse piece, and a clasp member swingingly mounted upon said transverse piece as its pivot and extendin toward and cooperating with said body plate to secure the clipv upon a suitable portion of the garment,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
