SLOP JAR OR PAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed April 21, 1906. Serial No. 313,043.
effectively preventnoxious odors from escaping from the slop jar after the cover or lid is placed thereon, the oint between the cover and the slop jar or pail proper embodying a liquid seal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slop jar or pail of such construction that the contents thereof may be poured out without interfering with the liquid seal and so that any surplus water which is not poured ofl the rim of the pail will be drained back into the main body of the slop jar or pail.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical diametrical section through a slop jar embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the cover removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a jar, pail or bucket of any suitable size or shape, the same being, for the purpose of carrying out this invention, provided with an annular supporting ledge 2 a short distance below the top or rim thereof, the extreme top edge of the pail being rolled outward to form a reinforcing rim or bead 3 which forms a support for the cover.
The cover 4 is of dished form,as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a marginal circumferential flange 5 which rests upon the rim 3 and further provided with a depending flange 6 which extends downward inside of the rim 3 into the water space hereinafter described.
Supported on the ledge 2 is a frusto-conical rim 7, the lower edge of which is preferably soldered or otherwise secured to the inside of the pail by a liquid-tight joint. The rim 7 inclines upwardly and inwardly away from the oppositely lying portion of the pail or jar to leave a V-shaped annular liquidcontaining space 8 into which the flange 6 of the cover fits, said flange being partially submerged in the liquid so as to form an abso lutely tight joint or seal between the jar or pail and the cover thereof, which has the effect of preventing noxious odors from escaping from the jar.
The conical rim 7 extends above the plane of the top of the pail or jar, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the upper edge thereof is provided with an inwardly extending seat flange 9 which leaves a substantially elliptical opening, the flange 9 forming a commode seat which is located above the plane of the rim at the top of the jar or pail. This rim is cut away at one side to form a pouring opening, the lower edge 10 of said opening determining the level of water contained in the space 8 and being located below the plane of the top of the rim 3, whereby the water will be drained from the space 8 back into the pail or bucket and yet leave sufficient water in said space to form a liquid seal in which the bottom portion of the flange 6 of the cover is received.
The jar, pail or bucket may be manufactured of sheet metal, enamel ware, porcelain, fiber or earthen ware and may be made of any suitable size. If desired, the cover may be provided with a rubber rim or gasket where it fits upon the jar or pail.
The same principle hereinbefore described may be applied to water coolers and the like for the purpose of excluding air and thereby effecting a material saving in ice.
I claim:
A device of the character described com- I the up er portion of the jar, said conical rim In testimony whereof, I affix my signature eXten ing above the bead to provide a comin presence of two witnesses.
'mode seat, and said rim having an incut CHARLES JOSEPH KIROH which serves as a pouring opening the lower 5 edge of which serves to determine the level Witnesses of water contained in said V-shaped space, A. S. PARSONS, substantially as specified. NANNIE M. SMITH.
