vention is to provide fractional line spacing devices which are simple in construction and efiicient in operation.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of arts and combinations of devices to be heremafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail central longitudinal sectional view taken through the platen and showing the features of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, the view heing'taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the device to be hereinafter more fully described, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on a line -90 in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow in said figure; the
view showing the line spacing'wheel and platen head in end elevation.
The platen comprises the usual external sheath 1 and internal wooden core 2; At one end of the platen is a platen head 3 which is secured to the platen by screws 4 that extend through holes in the platen head and take into'the core 2 of the platen. This platen head has a shoulder 3 seated within the core and an inwardly extending sleeve 5 that eonbears at one'end against'the shoulder on the sleeve and at the other end against the inner side of the platen frame. The sleeve 7 has a longitudinal slot 11' into which a pin .12 projects, the pin being carried by a spindle 13 received within the bore of the slee ve 7 and guided thereby in its'longitudinal movement. The outer end of the spindle 13 carries a finger wheel 14 secured thereto by a screw 14, whereas the inner end of said spindle bears against one end of the s indle 6, so as to move it longitudinally. T e opposite end of the platen carries a part which is shown in detail in Fig. 3. This piece is in a sense a platen head and comprises a disklike member 15 secured to a second disk-like member 16 by an intermediate cylindrical member '17", and an outwardly extending spindle or shaft-like member 18 projects from the disk-like member 16 and is seated in a bearing in the platen frame 8. A finger Wheel 19 is removabl'y secured by a screw 20 to thefree end of the member 18 where it projects beyond the platen frame. The
members 15, 16, 17 and 1.8 are preferably made in one piece and an end opening 2115 contained inthe disk-likemember 15 and the cylindrical member 17 for the reception of one end of the spindle 6. A set screw 22 is received in a threaded opening in the cylin dric al member 17' and the inner end of said v 80 screw is received in. a cut out portion 23 in the spindle 6, in order to limit the longitudinal movement of the spindle 6 and to prevent an accidental withdrawal of the spindle from its bearing 21. A coiled expansion spring 24 surroundsthe spindle 6 and bears at one end against the inner face of the member 15 and at its opposite end against a wedging or actuating device 25 hat is adjustably secured to the spindle by a set screw 26. This wedge-like device is in the nature of a sleeve that has a beveledwedging face 27 thereon.
The tension of the spring 24 is exerted to move the spindle 6 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 which tends to force the spindle 13 and the finger wheelconnected thereto, to the right in said figure, whereas ressure exerted on the finger wheel to move it in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, will move the spindle fi against thetension of the spring 24 and force the wedging device, 25 to the left in said figure. The disk like portion 16 has holes at 28 for the reception of screws 29 which unite the platen head to the platen. A coiled contractile spring 35 is connected at its ends to'the levers .33 and tends to draw the inner ends thereof towards each other and towards the'wedgin device 25. The
outer end 'portion'of each ever 33 is notchedat 36 for cooperation-with the disk-like member 16 of the platen head. The outer face of the disk-like member 16 constitutes. a
fulcrum against, which the end 37 of each lever 33 is adapted to bear and on which the lever turns as a pivotal center when actuated y the Wedging device 25. The outer edge or-tion 38 on the end of each lever bears against the inner face of a line spacing ratchet wheel 39 which is formed with a central opening and collar 40 by which the line spacing wheel is seated on a shouldered por-.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efficient fractional. line spacing mechanism'in which I am enabled to employ long levers 33 to secure an efficient frictional engagement between theflline spacing ratchet wheel and the laten in order to effectively lock the two in rictional engagement and prevent any accidental relative displacement between the.
line spacing ratchet wheel and platen when the two are engaged andthat I am enabled to readily disconnect. the devices by merely giving the finger wheel 14 a pressure sufficient to-ove'rcome the tension of the spring 24. It will be understood that the axial movement of the, spacing wheel is so slight that it is not appreciable in the operation of the device ,that is tosay, it does not affect therel'ation of "the line spacing wheel to the to the member comprising the parts 15, 16, ,cooperating line spacing mechanism, and de- 17 and 18. It will be understood from the foregoing description,- that pressure exerted upon the finger wheel 14 to effect a lon itudinal movement of-the spindle 6 towards t 1e left in Fig. 1, Will move the wedging device 25 to the left, thus enabling the inner ends of the levers 33 to be drawn closer together bythe tent roller.
It is apparent that' instead of two inde-- pendent spindles 6 and 13, a single spindle may be employed and that other changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What I clalm as new and des re to secure" by Letters Patent, is

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen head fixed to one end of. theplaten, a line spacing wheel that is adapted to turn with the platen or toafford a turning ofthe platen relatively thereto, and hand actuated means fixed against rotation'independently of-the platen but movable longitudinally thereof for effecting a movement of the i ne spacing wheel axially of the platen and into and out of frictional locking engagement with the wheel that is a apted to turn with the platen or to afiord a turning of the platen relatively thereto and independently of the line spacing means, and levers contaiiied within the platen and extending longitudinally thereof and which cooperate with the line spa'cing ratchet wheel, to effect amovem-ent thereof axially of the platen to force the line spacing wheel into and out of engagement with the platen head.
