VSALVIBB..
APPLICATION FILED PERS, 1908.
Patented sept.429,19o8.
JAMES L. WARHAM, OF ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SALVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed February 6, 1908. Serial No. 414,651.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs L.- WAREIIAM, a
subject of the King of England, residing aty Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Salvers and I do declare the following to be a full, clear', and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved tray or salver.
The object of the invention is :to provide a tray with means for supporting glasses and other vessels to prevent them from adhering to the bottom of the tray and from becoming Wet and soiling the lclothes of the user.
Another object is to provide a salver with a hole havin@ a thumb support to rest the hand and relieve the strain caused by the weight of the salver and thereby prevent the user from losing control thereof.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a salver constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on a line through the thumb hole.
In the embodiment illustrated the tray l is shown rectangular in form and having .a corrugated bottom 2 to prevent glasses and other vessels from adhering thereto or from becoming wet and soiling the clothes of the guests. This tray is preferably provided with a flange 3 extending therearound and has an opening 4 in the bottom thereof to form a thumb hold. A sleeve or collar 5 is arranged -within this hole 4 and has its edges bent outwardly or curved to form a comfortable support for the thumb of the Waiter, thus resting the hand and relieving the strain caused by the weight of the tray. If this sleeve were not provided the sharp edges of the tray would cut the thumb of the waiter and cause him to lose control of the salver with a possibility of his dropping it. The sleeve also projects above the upper face of the 4tray and prevents the drippings from running through the opening. It will thus be seen that this sleeve performs the double function of a thumb protector, and has means for preventing the passage of the drip liquid through the thumb hole opening.
I claim as my invention:
A salver or tray having an upstanding peripheral flange, with rib like members on its upper face, said tray having a thumb opening therein, an upwardly projecting circular flange or sleeve fitting tightly in said opening and extending above said rib-like members to perform the double function of a thumb protector and drip preventer.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
