Description

www@
getraut- @with J. WAYTT JONES, or PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, f Lmersratmtlvo. 89,931, ma May 11,1869.
IMPRovEMeNT 1N noon-Locks..` s
l i The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part oLthe same.
To all whom 'it 'ma/y concern;
Beit known that I, J WAYT'r JONES, of Paducah, in the countyof McCracken, and State of Kentucky,
n have inventcdanew and useful Improvement in Locks;
and I do' hereby declare that `the following isa full, clear, aud exact .description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use Athe same, reference being h ad to the accompanying drawing, lform# ing partof this specification.` 1,
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in locks for dwelling-houses, 'and all other buildings and situations where .door-locks are used; and
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the lock is made burglarproof, yand whereby the lock-key is made to operate on` both the lock-bolt and the knob-latch ouone side of the lock, and only on the lock-bolt on the other, as
will be hereinafter described.`
Figure 1 o'f the drawing is a top or plan view of the lock, with the cap off, showing the position of the different parts ofthe lock.
Figures 2 and 3`are sections, respectively, through the -lines z a: and y y, fig. 1.
A represents the shell, or portion of the casing which is the principal supportto the parts of the lock.
B is the, lock-bolt, which slides in a proper recess in A, which is operated by the lock-key.
The lock has an outside and an inside key-hole.
O is the outside, and
D is the inside key-hole.
E is a vertical slide, which is operated only inlo'cking the door on the inside. i
F is the latch-bolt.4 y
`Gris another vertical4 slide, which locks both bolts, and which cannot be unlocked,.except inthe manner hereafter described, and itis effected in the following manner: i
G rests on the bolt B, and the projection h falls into a notch, or recess in that bolt, andi the projection t drops behind the latch-bolt, as seen in thedrawing.
When thus situated, the bolts cannot be turned back, except ina particular manner.
To unlock/the door, the latch-bolt must vfirst be latch. N ow hold the key and turn the knob and latch 1 back with the other hand.
--The slide G then rests on the latch-bolt. Now turn, the key forward and, unlock. On the inside the ar rangement is dierent.
By means of the levers J and m and n, the key on the inside has complete control of every movement,
and can lock and unlock with a single turn ofthe key.
The slide E constitutes the mainA feature of my invention, as it is what I calla burglar-attachment,
and which can only be operated bythe key on the inside.
This slide `rests upon the lock-bolt when the door is locked or unlocked from the outside, but when the bolt is thrown by the key from inside, it throws further than from the outside, and the slide E drops into the notch k, in the bolt, and l, in the latch, thussecurely fastening both.
It will beseen that the levers m and n, which work on pivots in the cap of the lock, are operated by the inside movement for eifecting this result.
' When the door is unlocked, the latch' is lett free to `be operated by the knob.
This lock `is particularly'adapted to all purposes where security from burglars is an object. It is not liable to get out of order.
A single light spring, o, behind the lever Jis vall rthat is required, exceptthe spiral spring p, for throwing the latch. v
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of tue slides E and G with the bolts B and F, and levers J, m, and n, arranged substantially as shown and described, for thek purposes set forth.
