To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MELANCTHON E. ZEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilboa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Rein-Buckles 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, 'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to harness buckles and is especially adapted for use on reins.

The object of the invention is to produce a buckle with an end cross bar and an intermediate cross bar, each provided with studs so formed as to securely hold the strap or rein at two points and still leave plenty of room for the free and easy passage of two thicknesses of strap between said end and intermediate cross bars.

The invention consists in forming the stud on the end cross bar to point outward and the stud on the intermediate cross bar to point in the opposite direction whereby said bent portions which serve to securely hold the strap or rein extend away from each other and leave plenty of room for the passage of the two thicknesses of said strap.

The invention also consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified in -the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the buckles with a strap secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the buckle.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the buckle, which is preferably made integral, comprises two side bars 1, two end cross bars 2 and 3, respectively, and an intermediate cross bar 4. Said latter cross bar is arranged in a different plane from that of the end cross bars, as is usual. The end cross bar 2 carries a hooked or bent stud 5 depending therefrom. It will be noted that the shank 5a of said stud does not extend at rightangles to the plane of the two end cross bars but is bent slightly outward as illustrated in Fig. 3. The hooked portion 5b of said stud being at right angles to its shank, is consequently arranged on an upward incline. This serves to hold the loop 6 of the strap or rein 7 in a spread or open position. The intermediate cross bar 4 has a bent or hooked stud 8 extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom. It will thus be seen that the hooked portions of said studs extend inopposite directions or away from Yeach other. One end of the strap or rein 7 is secured to the stud 8 and thence extends forward where it is looped as at 6. Said strap is then passed back through the buckle, that is above the intermediate cross bar and below the end cross bars, and secured to the stud 5. It is obvious from Fig. 3 that plenty of room is left between said studs for the two thick# nesses of the strap which would not be the case if said studs extended in the same direction or toward each other.

I claim:

l. A buckle of the character described, having end cross bars and an intermediate cross bar, a stud carried by one of said end cross bars and pointing outwardly away from said other cross bars, and a stud carried by said intermediate cross bar and pointing in the opposite direction and away from the first mentioned stud.

2. A buckle of the character described having end cross bars-and an intermediate cross bar, a stud on one of said end cross bars comprising a shank which is bent slightly outward and a bent or hook portion extending outwardly and slightly upward from said shank, and a hooked stud carried by said in termediate cross bar and extending away from the stud on said end cross bar.
