UNirED STAT DUDLEY W. IMUS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
snow-CASE Fon Drs-PLAYING PICKLES AND 'rim To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, DUDLEY W. IMUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, California, have invented a new and useful ShowCasc for Displaying Pickles and the Like, of which the following is a specifi-eation.
This invention relates to means for displaying goods contained in jars or other receptacles, in a manner suitable for use in a grocery store to attract customers. l Y
The invention is designed largely to display pickles and like goods in an attractive manner in the ordinary opaque earthen jais so that it will be unnecessary for merchants to purchase more expensive glass jarsin order to display the pickles so they may be clearly seen by prospective customers.
Experience has shown that when pickled 20 goods are kept submerged in brine or vinegar the air must have free access to the pickling or preserving fluid or the )roper preservation of the goods will be interfered with, and also the attractive appearance of the goods destroyed by reason of scum rising to the surface of the preserving liquid.
An object of this invention is so to display such goods that there will be nothing to hinder them from being clearlv seen, but at the same time, insects will be kept out and free access of air permitted. i
Other objects .are to provide for compact and convenient arrangement of the containing vessels; for ready access thereto; and for convenient storage of ladles and the like used in removing the contents of said receptacles.
Other obj ects and advantages may hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention Figure 1 is an isometric perspective showing a sct of jars mounted in a show case embodying the invention. Fig.' 2 is a rear view of the case.
, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line X3 of Figs.
1 and 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail showing more clearly the manner of covering the-jars.
The supporting means ofthe show caseincludes a traine having side- pieces 1 and 2, between which are mounted a pluralityv of shelves 3, 4 and 5 arranged in a stepped series an 'l supported in any suitable manner as by boards 6 nailed to said sidepieces, to per- Speccation bf Letters Patent.
Application filed. May 5, 1908. .Serial No. 431,052.
fornrthe function of cleats. lUpon each of thc shelves is mounted a row .of open-topped rece )taclcs dsir-ably als 7 of uniform heiglit. Each row of j als is provided with a lid hinged at S to cover the saine, said lid consisting of a sash 9 having an luider section of wire screen 10 )rovided with a cut-away portion 11 over tlie top of each jar to form a. sight-opening for the clear observation of the contents of the jars.
12 designates a metal seivage extending around the edge of each opening 11 in the screen, and 12 a selvage extending around the outer edges of the screen.
The sashes are each provided with an upper transparent section 13 preferably of glass. As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, there' is a clearance between screen 10 and glass 13 so that air may readily ascend around the jars and pass downwardl) thereinto between the screen and glass. Whenpickied goods are placed in the jars, this construction tends to preserve them, it 'being impossible to keep such goods fresh when the' container is occasionally o ened but kept air-tight during the intervalls.
The lid for the lower row of jars is, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings', supported wholly by the'jars when in the closed position. `All the lids should rest principally on the tops of the jars to insure a close it so that insects cannot enter between the screen and the tops of the jars, but the two upper lids are shown touching lightly at each end upon the tops of casings or hollow posts 14. Said posts 14 may contain counterbalancing weights 15 fastened to cords 16 led over pulleysY 17 to` the sash.
Said counterbalancing weights tend to prevent the lids closing with a jar that might break the glass. In order to further deadcn the jar upon the glass, the sashes are provided with a layer 1S of felt or like material above and belowthe edges of the glass.
It is important that the screens be provided with the openings 11 above the tops of the jars, because the contents of a jar cannot be clearly seen when covered by an unbroken' screen, and a clear disclosure of the contents 105 of the jars aids in awakening the interest of customers and therefore in making sales of goods offered for sale in the show case.
Patented s epaez, 190s. f
soY
The sashes are preferably countersunk' on their lower sides at 19 for the reception of the screen. Buttons 20 may be provided to detachably hold the'screen in piace, it being de- =irabltoremove the screen. occasionally to clean the under Asidof the glass.
21 are knobs for lifting the sash. The space at th.,- rear of the case may be partitioned oil'` byupright cross-wall 22 and division walls 23 to make suitable provision Vfor la-dlcs 24 for dispensing the goods; said ladlcs being dcsirably kept in water 'in jars 25 and held in place by hooks 26. The compartments between jars 25 may be utilized to `contain 'the packages in which the pickles The side walls 1 and 2 of the case may rise considerably above the lids to shield the glass in the sash at all times. A back-board 27 is provided at. the rear of the case for a similar purpose.
28 designates stops in the form of strips extending along the top of the shelves near their rear sides to prevent the jars from beine' pushed too far back to sit squarely under tiie openings 11 in the screens.
One important feature of the invention is that the case is so constructed that the air has access to the jars from all sides thereof. The entire case is raised somewhat from the fioor being desirably mounted on casters 29 which allow the air to pass under the case to the rea-reside of the front row of jars and also above the cross wall 22 and thence upwardly between the middle and rear row of the jars. The appearance of the show case is made more attractive and the air allowed to circulate more freely thereunder by reason of the front shelf 3 and the rear platform 30 being raised above the floor a suitable distance.
I claim:
