STOCKING-SUPP ORTER To all whom it 'may concern.'

Be it known that I, ALFRED M. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Stocking-Supporters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention has for its object the production of a novel stocking supporter comprising a flat web having a slit between its ends in which is inserted and set a metallic socket to be engaged by a metal piece connected with another part of the web and forming a part of the supporter. The fabric used for the production of my novel stocking supporter will have preferably at suitable distances in its length bends produced by weaving as provided for in United States Patent No. 698,777, granted to me and dated April 29, 1902.

The flat web A to embrace the leg B may be woven as provided for in said United States Patent No. 698,777, it being woven to present a bend or crook a. The web herein presented differs from the web shown in said patent in that the bent or crooked part of the web is provided with a slit that may be made during the weaving of the web by manipulating the warp and weft as customarily done in the weaving of buttonholes in suspender and other webbing.

Fig. 5 of the drawing shows a slit a2 formed as specified in the weaving of the web and having selvage edges, such a slitted part of the fabric being capable of withstanding greater wear than if the slit be formed by a cut in a woven fabric. On one side of the bent art of the web over said slit a2 I lay a meta 'c washer c having a circular hole, and from the opposite side of the web I insert Specification of Letters Patent.

through said slit and the hole in the washer the tubular shank c of a plate c2, the end of said shank being thereafter overturned, as

shown by full lines Fig. 4, on to the washer c as eyelets are commonly set, thus constituting a socket, the overturning of the end of the shank effecting the firm clamping of the web between the washer and the plate c2, the woven or selvage edges of the slit embracing the exterior of said tubular shank.

A socket, such as shown, may be so firmly attached to the web as not to be capable of being pulled off by any strain on the socket in the use of the stocking supporter. The upper side of the socket forms a circular raceway on which the'shoulder of the neck of a foot to be described rides. The plate c2 having the tubular shank e has combined with it a device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 as a washer l() having an extension 12 that substantially crosses the web, such device besides restraining the tipping of the socket in the web also assisting by being grasped in manipulating the garter. This device l() is a separate washer or plate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

The member or part coacting with the socket described and forming part of the stocking supporter, comprises an extension plate D having at one end a foot cl2 shown as of heart shape, said attaching pl'ate being provided midway its length with a slot d through which is inserted one end of the web forming part of the stocking supporter, said end being led backwardly under the portion d of said extension plate and secured to the web in any usual manner common to stocking supporters. The portion d of the eX- tension plate occupies a position between the folded end of the web, and when the web is grasped between the thumb and finger, the

portion d is also grasped and firmly held soA that the foot d2 at the opposite end of said eX- tension plate maybe readily manipulated and placed at any desired angle with relation to the hole in the socket, said portion d acted upon by the web when the garter is in use preventing the tipping of the extension plate and its detachment from the socket. The extension plate is bent between its slotted part and the foot d2 to leave an upright/neck or portion d3 presenting a shoulder d6 that rides on the flanged outer edge of the tubular shank before described, the part d3 of the neck contacting with the inner wall of said shank when the foot is in its operative engagement with the socket. The foot d2 is of a length, measured from its toe 4 to its heel portions 5, a little greater than the diameter of the hole through the socket so that when the foot is engaged operatively with the socket, both the toe and heels ride on the under side of the plate c2, the foot turning axially for a limited distance to and fro in the socket as the stocking supporter is used, but the foot cannot be disengaged from the socket except by so moving the foot that the heels 5 may be iirst pushed from under the edge of the plate c2 and thereafter by tipping the extension plate the foot may be drawn out of the socket, the toe following the heel.

To engage the foot of the attaching plate with the socket, the portion d of the extension plate together with the web crossing its opposite sides will be engaged by the thumb and linger and the plate and foot will be put into the angular position shown by dotted lines Fig. 4, and thereafter the toe of the foot will be pushed down through the socket, the toe being passed under the edge of the plate c2 and then the heel part of the foot will be pushed into the socket until the shoulder d rests on the overturned flanged end ofthe socket, a slight backward movement of the foot taking place as the upright portion da of the neck contacts with the interior of the socket, letting the heels 5 of the foot pass under the plate c2.

It will be remembered that in use all the strains on the stocking supporter have a tendency to maintain the upright portion d3 of the neck in contact with the inner wall of the socket, and thus keep the heels 5 of the foot under the plate c2.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :h

1. In a stocking supporter, a web woven to present a crook or bend and provided with a slit having selvage edges, a washer applied to the outer side of the web above the slitted portion, and a plate having a tubular shank applied to the opposite side of said web, the shank being passed through said slit and also through the hole in the washer, the end of the shank being upset on said washer to clamp the web firmly between said plate and washer,

In a stocking supporter, a web woven to present a crook or bend and provided near its longitudinally convex edge with a slit having selvage edges, a Washer applied to the outer side of said web above the slitted portionand a plate having a tubular shank a plied to the opposite side of said web, tlie shank passing through the slit and through the hole in said washer, the end of the shank being upset on the washer to clamp the web firmly between the plate and the washer, the

shank having a connected extension lying on the face of the web.

3. A web having a slit formed therein near one edge and at a distance from the opposite edge, a socket inserted in said slit, and an extension connected at one end to said socket and free at its opposite end, said extension extending from said socket towards the opposite edge of the web and lying on the face thereof.
