ACCORDION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed May 22, 1908. Serial No. &34,224.
T all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, HANs HOI-INER, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Accordions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an accordion pro vided with novel and effective means for softening or rounding the tone and at the same time increasing the power thereof.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a face view of an accordion embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an end view thereof Fig. 3 a longitudinal section through one of the accordion heads on line 33, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a cross section thereof on line 44, Fig. 2.
Accordion head is provided with a keyboard 11, the keys 12 of which operate the valves 18 that control the sound openings 14, as usual. On head 10 is mounted a casing forming a sound chamber 15 with which openings 14 communicate. This casing or sound box has a front plate made with a flat section 16 which joins key-board 11. The top plate has further an outwardly bulged section 17 to form an integral semi-tubular horn. This horn extends along the entire length of sound chamber 15 and gradually increases in width from the treble keys towards the base keys. That side of the horn which is away from the key-board, is extended rearwardly as at 18 to contact with head 10, after which the top plate is bent at right angles to form a fiat triangular section 19 directly supported on head 10.
Horn 17 has an upper elbow 20 terminating in a belled mouth 21 that projects above and also in front of the instrument, so as not to interfere with the player.
Chamber 15 is closed at its back by the key-board 11, at its top and bottom by the end plates 22, and at its front by the extended side 18 of horn 17.
It will be seen that the sound waves entering chamber 15 will fiow along flat section 16 thereof towards the bulged section 17. VVithin this bulged section or horn, the waves will be entrapped and deflected upwardly, to be emitted through belied mouth 21. In this way the power of the instrument is increased, while the quality and softness of its tone is improved.
I claim:
1. An accordion provided. with a sound box having a bulged section that extends along said box, substantially as specified.
2. An accordion having a head, combined with a sound box having an integral bulged section extending along said box, substantially as specified.
3. An accordion having a head, combined with a sound box having an integral bulged section that extends along the box and widens from end to end, substantially as specified.
4. An accordion having a head, combined with a sound box having an integral bulged and tapering section that is extended into con,- tact with the head, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Manhattan,) N. Y., this 20th day of May, 1908.
HANS HOIINER. Witnesses EDWARD E. BRAENDLE, GHAs. S. KIENE.
