LOCK CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed March 18, 1908. Serial. No. 421,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY G. VoIeHT and CHARLES J. CALEY, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in looks, and has for its object means for connecting a lock to a door in a simple and eflicient manner.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an escutcheon plate member of the lock, certain parts being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, a certain part being shown in elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are views corresponding respectively to Figs. 1 and 2, but showing a modification.
1 represents the stile of a door to which the lock is to be applied.
2 is the case of a lock of the well-known rim lock type.
2 is the rear cover or cap-plate which is secured to the case 2 after the lock mechanism (not shown) is placed therein, the said plate being secured in any well-known manner, as by ordinary machine screws (not shown). Projecting rearwardly from the cap-plate 2 is a hollow tubular boss 2 In the drawings two of these tubular bosses 2 are shown. Where these bosses 2 meet the cap-plate 2 there is a somewhat reduced threaded portion 2 arranged to receive the threaded end of a cylinder lock 3, so that the roll-back 3 thereof will stand within the case 2 to properly engage the lock mechanism, in the well-known manner.
4 is an escutcheon plate adapted to the opposite side of the door from the case 2. The tubular extension 2 is adapted to extend through a passage in the door stile near and through a passage in the escutcheon plate 4, the outer end of said tubular extension being threaded to receive a clamping nut 5.
6 is a rose plate or finishing plate adapted to'bear against the escutcheon plate 4 and overstand the nut 5, hiding the latter from view when the parts are assembled. The cylinder lock 8 serves to hold the finishing plate 6 against its seat, the flanged outer end of said lock 3 holding said finishing plate 6 in place, as shown in Fig. 2.
The usual set-screw (not shown) carried by the case 2 and arranged to engage in a side groove of the cylinder-lock, in the usual man ner, retains it in place after proper adjustment has been efiected.
As will be seen, by this arrangement an absolutely accurate alinement of the parts may be effected, and at the same time the case 2, plate 4 and finishing plate 6 may be properly positioned and firmly clamped together, the only manner of separating said parts being possible while the door stands open and access may be had to the means for holding the cylinder lock against removal.
It should be understood that the escutcheon plate may be of any desired shape or design, in this instance its most important function being to furnish a proper bearing for the locking device 5. The tubular boss affords not only a broad bearing support and connection, but also provides a passage whereby access may be had to the interior of the look from the outside through the medium of a proper instrumentality, for example, such as a key adapted to the cylinder lock 3. NVhere a cylinder lock is employed, it, in turn, serves to reinforce the strength .of the tubular boss 2 for, as will be apparent, it would not only be necessary to tear away the locking device 5 before the escutcheon could be removed and the lock released, but it would also be necessary to break the connection of the cylinder lock 3 with the cap-plate 2 which would be practically impossible and an act that would not be resorted to in view of the many easier methods of obtaining an unlawful entry.
In Figs. 3 and 4, we have shown a modification in which, instead of extending the tubular boss entirely through the door, it is extended partially through the same, in this instance a companion tubular boss being formed on the rear of the escutcheon plate. The bosses in this case are flanged inwardly to provide a bearing for clamping devices in the form of screws to take the place of the clamping nut 5. In this instance, as before, the protecting rose may be employed but, as shown, may be of a different form. In Figs. 3 and 4, 1 represents the door stile, 2 the lock case and 3 the cylinder lock, as before. member, and a clamping device carried by is the capplate, 2 is the inwardly extending tubular boss from the cap-plate 2 said boss being provided with an inwardly directed flange 2 4 is the escutcheon plate, 4* is a tubular boss projecting rearwardly therefrom and corresponding to the boss 2. 4 is a flange on the boss 4" corresponding to the flange 2 These. flanges aflord clearance room for the securing screws 5 to draw said bosses toward. each other to clamp the lock case 2 and escutcheon 4 tightly against op posite sides of the door. In this instance the screw-thread to receive the threaded end of the cylinder lock 3 may be formed at the inner edge of the flange 2 6" is the roseplate overstanding the -cavity within the boss 4?, as best seen in Fig. 4. In this instance, as before, the protecting rose 6 is held in proper position by the flange at the outer end of the cylinder lock 3.
The lock case on one side constitutes one member and the escutcheon another member to be clamped to the door, and in the claims we will use these terms in order to give the proper scope thereto.
