PENCIL' ATTACHMENT.
specificata@ of Letters Patent.
Patented .'Aug. 25, 1908.
Application led December 30, 1967. Serial No. 408,538.
T o all 'whom- 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, RAY L. NICHOLS and LEONC. KLEIDON, citizens of the United l States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county f and exact description of the invention, such as will enable' others skilled in the vart to v which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for pencils, and has for its Object to provide a reservoir for water, which reservoir may be detachably connected with an indelible pencil, and provided with means, asfa sponge, whereby-a surface may be moistened before writing thereon with the pencil.
Another object is -to provide a device of this kind which may beV cheaply manufacturd and which may be conveniently operate In the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 isa side elevation of a pencil fitted with our attachment; Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a'side elevation of the reservoir or barrel.
As-shown, our device comprises a reservoir or'barrel, y1, provided with a closed-lower end, 2, and an open end, 3, with a sponge in said Open end, the barrel, 1, being adapted to hold Va-liquid as, for. instance, water.
end, 6, of the pencil, 7. l Thebarrel, 1, is a .Inorder to detachably connect the barrel 1 to the pencil, We provide a tube or sleeve, 5, internally threaded at both ends and adapted to'receive the threaded upper .threaded at its lower end and is screwed into the upper end of the tube, 5. When the sponge, 4, is not in use it is desirable that the same be covered to protectit from dust or the like, and'to prevent-the same coming into Contact .with theiclothing of the person using the pencil. To this end is provided-a ca 8,
' adapted to fit over the upper end of the arrel, 1 and the sponge, 4, and frictionally engaging the sides of the said barrel, whereby the cap is retained in place. To adapt the cap to be quickly and easily fitted over the barrel 1 the latter is tapered at'its Outer end as shown at 9 and this tapered end also forms a contracted mouth for holding the sponge 4.
A pencil fitted With this attachment may be operated as follows: The barrel, 1, having been flledwith water, the sponge 4 is insertedin the open end thereof and is moistened withthe water. Thev cap, 8, is removed and the sponge, 4, used to moisten the surface to be written on', as by rubbing the sponge thereon. The indelible pencil is then used to write on said moistened surface andthe moisture thereof causes the substance of said indelible encil to readily unite with said moistened? surface, whereby an indelible writing 0r signature is easily made.
While in this description minute details of the invention have been described, we do not limit Ourselves to these, as the same may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus particularly described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a tubular reservoir having a closed lower end and an Open upper end, an absorbent element arranged in said Popen upper end, a cap for said end adapted to slide on said reservoir and an interiorly threaded sleeve attached to the lower end of said reservoir and ada ted to detachably engage the end of a pencil).
v 2. In combination with a pencil having a threaded end, of a barrel havmg a closed end threaded On its exterior, the other end of said barrel being Open, a sponge disposed in said open end, a ca fitting over said o en end, and an interior y screw threaded s eeve engaged with the threaded lower end of saidl barrel and with the upper end of said pencil.v
whereof we have hereunto presence Oftwo subscrlbmg RAY L. NICHOLS. LEO o. KLEIDON.
` In testimony set our hands 1n wltnesses.-
