J. WAhL. I PACKING BOAL,
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5, I908.
P will HHM i n" HUN/'1 I I "WM PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908.
JOSEPH WAHL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PACKING-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
7 Application filed. June 5, 1908. Serial No. 436,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WAHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PackingBoxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packing boxes, and more particularly to boxes of this character which are made of pasteboard and of which the body and cover are each made from a single blank which can be folded in such a manner as to form the box and unfolded when it is desired to ship the box in knock-down condition.
The particular object of the invention is to provide an improved locking connection between the end and side walls of the body and cover. The end and side walls are interlocked in such a manner that a strong and durable box is obtained, which will not come apart when the same is in use.
W ith these ends in view the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packing box constructed.according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 shows the locking end of one end-wall of either the body or cover, Fig. 4 shows the lockin end of one of the side-walls, Fig. 5 is a detai section showing one step in the locking together of the end and side walls, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing a further step in the connection of the parts, and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through the completed interlocking connection.
In the drawing a denotes the cover of the box and b the body thereof. The cover and body are each formed from a single blank in substantially the same manner, the invention consisting in the interlocking connection between the end and side walls of the same.
As shown in Fig. 1, the end-walls a of the cover are provided at their ends'with extensions or flaps a which extend over the sidewalls a and are interlocked therewith.
tongue is Only one such locking connection need be described.
As shown in Fig. 3, each extension a is provided at its end with a tongue a having a transverse slit of. Projecting from the tongue a at the free end thereof, is a small tab a. At the junctions between the exten sion or flap o and the side-wall and between said extension or flap and the tongue 0/ creases are formed, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, to permit the parts to be folded inwardly. A similar crease is formed between the tongue (1 and the small tab a. The locking end of each side-wall a is provided with three slits c, c 0 the slit 0 being nearest the end of the side-wall, while the slit 0 which is out in such a way as to form a small flap e is located between the slits 0, 0 The slit 0 and flap 0 correspond in width with the tab a and slit u while the slit 0 is intended to receive the tongue a The parts are locked together in the manner shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The extension a is folded over the end-portion of the sidewall a and its tongue a passed through the slit 0, as shown in Fig. 5, after which the said folded down from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. 7, in which it lies against the inner face of the side wall. The flap e is passed into the slit (L as shown in Fig. 7, and aids in holding the tongue in position against the inner face of the side-wall, the tab a of the tongue beingpassed through the slit 0 into the space between the side-wall and the extension a whereby the tongue is still more firmly held in position.
The advantages of the improved box are that it may be readily folded into shape in the manner described, the connection between the end and'side walls being a very strong and reliable one, and that the box may be readily unfolded so that the blanks which form the body and cover may be stored in flat condition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a packing box, the combination of a side-wall provided at its end with slits, an end-wall having an extension folded on the end-portion of said side-wall, a tongue on said extension passing through said slits in the sidewall, and a connection between said tongue and said side-wall by which the former is held against the'inner face of the latter, comprising a flap on one of said parts interlocking with a slit in the other part.
v 2. In a packing box, the combination, with a side-wall having slits and an intermediate flap, of an end-wall provided with an extension extending over said side-wall, a tongue on said extension passed through one of said slits and provided with a slit with which said intermediate flap is interlocked, and a tab at the end of said tongue passed through the other slit of the side-wall into the space between the latter and said extension.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH WAHL.
