Description

No. 895,731. PATENTED AUG. 11, 1908.
. J. F. BEARING."
ROLLING PULVERIZER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 6, 1908.
A Home JAMES F. DEARING, OF SUTTER COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
ROLLING PULVERIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application filed April 6, 1908. Serial No. 425,478.
' .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. DEARING, a citizen of the United States, residing in Sutter county, in the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Pulverizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for rolling plowed ground and prepare it for planting and has for its object the provision of a device consisting of a roller having a pluralit of rings loosely mounted thereon with teet projecting therefrom at angles to the radial lines of the rings, the rings being so mounted on the roller that the teeth point downwardly on the front side thereof and when the device is in operation the teeth break up the clods and when they leave the soil pick it up so as to leave it loose and mellow.
The construction and operation of my improved pulverizer, will be described in detail ereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved pulverizer, Fig. 2, a cross section, and Fig. 3,
a detail view of one of the toothed rings.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates the frame of my improved pulverizer on which are secured the hangers 2.
3 indicates a shaft journaled in hangers 2 and 4 a roller rotatably mounted on said shaft. Rings 5 are loosely mounted on roller 4 and have teeth 6 projecting from their outer surfaces, each of said teeth being at an angle of about thirty-five degrees to the radial line of the ring passing through the base of the tooth.
It will be understood that by forming the bearing surface of the device of the loosely mounted rings 5 admits of the removal of a broken or defective ring and replacing it with a perfect ring without great trouble. As shown in the drawings each of the rings has a beveled flange 7 extending from one side and has its interior beveled as shown at 8 to receive the beveled projection on the adj acent ring, but this construction is not essential to the complete operation of my invention which consists primarily in the provision of the teeth 6 arranged at an angle as stated.
The rings 5 are placed on the roller 4 so that the teeth 6 on the front side of the pulverizer point downwardly. WVhen the ma chine is drawn forwardly it will be understood that the teeth dig into the soil and break up any clods or lumps that they come in contact with and when they leave the soil through the rotation of the roller they pick it up and leave it loose and mellow.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a rolling pulverizer, a roller, rings loosely mounted on the roller, each of said rings having a beveled flange at one side and the interior of its other side beveled to receive the flange on the adjacent ring, and cultivating means secured to the ring.
2. A rolling pulverizer comprising a frame, a roller rotatively mounted in said frame, rings loosely mounted on said roller each of said rings having a beveled flange at one side and the interior of its other side beveled to receive the beveled flange on the adjacent ring, and teeth projecting from said rings at an angle to the radial lines, the teeth on the front side of the pulverizer pointing downwardly.
3. A rolling pulverizer consisting of a roller, rings loosely mounted on the roller, each of said rings having a beveled flange at one side and the interior of its other side beveled to receive the beveled flange on the adjacent ring, and teeth projecting from said IIIIOS.
Til testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
