Be it known that l, vAnorrn PLAoi-nnv, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the countyiif Scott and State of lowa, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearings for Washing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism that is particularly adaptedfor operating the rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft of washing machines, and is so constructed that both foot-and hand power can be employed to'actuate it, and impart momentum to a speeded-up fly-wheel which is utilized to assist the manual efi'ort' re uired for working the machine, substantial y as hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a washing machine having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same looking at it at right angles to the view point of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the lower portion of the machine drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the underneath of the machine drawn to the same scale as Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings A represents the tub of a washing machine, which is su ported by, say four legs a, a, a, a, in tie usual manner. This tub is provided with a lid or cover B, which is hinged to a wooden strip b permanently closing a segment of the top of the tub, and it has secured to it, in a plane parallel to its hinged edge, a support- 1ng-frame which, preferably, extends from one edge post to the center of the lid,
at which point it is provided with bearings 'for the vertically disposed rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft l). The lower end of shaft D extends down into the tub and is provided with a stirrer-head d of conventional design, and its up er end extends through its bear- ,ings and ms a beveled pinion e secured thereto which meshes with and is engaged by a beveled gear E on the adjacent end of a horizontally disposed drive-shaft F, which is journaled in hearings in the supporting frame .O. I prefer to so construct the su orting frame that one section thereof will be secured to thelid of the .machine and the other section screwed or otherwise secured thereto and together therewith provide a chamberfor said beveled gear to operate in ed thereon, and said fly-wheel projecting upwards from its boss a suitablev distance above the to of the tub, by means of which it is operate Said segmental gear also has an arm I projecting laterally from its boss, which is, pre erably, integral with the rim of said gear also, and has its end farthest from said boss pivotally connected to a connecting-rod J, whose opposite end is pivotally connected to the crank-pinj of a crank 9 This crank is secured to and projects from the adjacent outer end of a horizontally disposed shaft 3, and outside of the end of' the connecting-rod crankin 7' has a bicycle or other suitably shape pedal mounted thereon, by means of which the operator, in

Shaft 3 extends under the center of the tub and its inner end has a comparatively large gear 4 mounted thereon, the beveled teeth of which. meshes with a beveled pinion 5 made integralwith the lowerend of the boss of a horizontally disposed fly-wheel 6 whose center of revolution alines with the axis of the tub, immediately under whose bottom said ily-wheel is located. The su porting-frame for shaft 3 and the crank, an ear 4 mountcomprises a horizontally disposed U-shaped frame 7, one of whose branches is constructed as shown in Fig, 5 and serves as a screw-plate which is screwed or otherwise secured to the underside of the tub, and has hearings in its ends for the vertical spindle 8 on which-the flywheel is journaled' in any suitable manner. From the outer end of this U-shaped frame, a hanger 9 depends the lower end of which is rovided with an outwardly projecting bearmg boss 10, in which the outer end of shaft 3 powerto assist in operating .is journaled. From the inner end of the lower leg of said U-shaped frame a post 12 depends that has bearings 13 therein for the inner end of shaft 3, and has its lower end provided with a basal fiangel i that rests on the intersection of the cross-braces of the legs, and a lug 16 extending through a suitable opening said extension and has an eye therein below the plane of said intersection through which a suitable cotter pin-or its e uivalent maybe inserted to anchor it in p ace. The bearing boss 16 of han er 9 projects through an opening in a suita le metal cross-piece 17, whose ends are bent so asto enable it to be secured to the inner side of the legs of the tub between which the outer end of shaft 3, is located. The supporting-frame thus constructed forms a strong and r' 'd framework for shaft 3, gear 4, and the y'- wheel, and the lower part of the tub.
What I claim as new is:
1. In mechanism for driving a washing machine the combination with a vertically disposed rotary reciprocal shaft, a transverse rotary reciprocal shaft for actuating said vertical shaft, devices operatively connectin said shafts and a pinion on the end ofsai transverse shaft farthest from said vertical shaft, of a reciprocallever, a segmental gear concentric to the fulcrum of and secured to said lever, an arm pro'ectin from said gear, a fly-wheel, a drive-shaft. t erefor having a crank on its outer end, means operatively connecting said fly-wheel and drive-shaft and. a rod connecting said crank and arm.
2. In mechanism for. driving a washing machine-the combination with a vertically disposed rotary reci rocal shaft, a transverse rotary reciprocal s raft actuating said vertical shaft, devices operatively connecting said shafts and a pinion on the end of said transverse shaft farthest from said vertical shaft, of a reciprocal lever, a-segmental gear concentric to'the fulcrum of and secured to said lever, an arm projecting from said gear, a horizontally disposed fly-wheel, a horlzontal drive-shaft therefor having a crank on its outer end, means operatively connecting said fiy-wheel and 'drive-shaftand a rod connecting said crank and arm.
' 3. In mechanism for driving a washing machine the combination with a vertically disposed 'rotary reciprocal shaft, a transverse rotary reciprocal shaft for actuating said vertical shaft, devices operativelyconnecting said shafts and a pinion on'the end of said concentric to t transverse shaft farthest from said vertical shaft, of a reci rocal lever, a segmental gear he fulcrum of and secured to said lever, an arm projecting from said gear,
which is below and alines with that of said vertical shaft, a horizontal drive-shaft therefor havin a crank on its outer end, means operative y connecting said fly-wheel and drive-shaft and a rod connecting said crank and arm.
4. In mechanism for driving a washing machine the combination with a suitable supporting member, a verticall disposed rotary reciprocal shaft journaled 1n the same, and means for actuating said vertical shaft, of a horizontally disposed drive-shaft deriving motion from said means, a horizontal flywheel revolved by said drive-shaft, and an integral frame comprising a U-shaped portion the u per leg of which secured to the bottom 0 said supporting member and between the ends, of which said fly-wheel is journaled and which has from the lower leg of said -shaped o'rtion in which said drive-shaft is "ournal'e 5.
