www G- b CHARLES AB. KERR, OF COLUMBUS, INDIANA.
Laim Pimm No. 89,486, ma Apel 27, 1869. I
To all whom it ina/y concern Be it known that I, CHARLES B. KERR, of Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow# point, showing the extreme point thereof, as made of steel, land arranged so as to be readily removable.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the steel portion, and showing the shank, or arm .for securing the same to the cast-iron portion.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation on line x x of g. 1.
Corresponding letters represent corresponding' parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to au improvement in plowpoints; and
It consistsin forming, in the upper surface of the cast portion of such point a recess, or cavity, at the point where the shank, or arm of the steel portion terminates, so that, when it becomes necessary to remove such steel portion, it can readily be done by placing a punch, or set, or any suitable instrument against the rear end of such portion, and striking the same with a hammer.' y
A, in the drawings, represents a 'cast-metal plowpoint, which may be of any suitable form of construction to fit any of the different plows in use, it being provided with the necessary projections and belt-holes, for securing it to the share or mould-board thereof.
Within the upper surface of this point, and extending from its front end backward, for a distance sucient to receive and hold the steel termination thereof, there is formed a dovetailed recess, as shown at C, in fig. 3of
the drawings. l
'lo facilitate the removal of such steel portion of the point, I form, within the cast portionof the point, just where the steel portion terminates, a cavity, oi recess, which, in depth, should be about equal to the thickness of the steel portion of the point, and of a width snllicient to receive an end of a punch, or other suitable instrument for driving the same out of its recess within such cast portion ofthe point.
vB represents a steel termination, or point, which has, upo'n its inner end, a shank, or arm, which is made to t the dovetailed groove in -the cast portion of the point, as shown in iig. 3 of the drawings.
That portion of this steel termination (as it will be termed) which extends beyond the cast portion ofthe point, is so constructed as to canse the shoulder formed thereon to abut against the front end of such cast portion, and at the same time cause the extreme point, or end, to form a continuation ofthe point proper.
It will be perceived that this steel termination of.' the pointmay be readily removed from the cast-metal portion, whenever it becomes necessary to do so, for the purpose of sharpening the same, or for the purpose of replacing it with a new one from a stock which may be kept constantly on hand for thatpurpose.
The advantages of this device will be apparent when it is remembered that this portion of a plow is always the first to wear out, and consequently to need repairs, which repairs, in ordinary cases, consume much time,
but which, as a consequence of my improvement, can be made at any time, within a few minutes, and, with out removing the plow from the field where it is being used.
I have described the steel termination B, as applicable to a cast-metal plow-point, but it is apparent that it is equallyapplicable toa share, or mould-board cast so as to receive it, and thus to dispense with the cast point, which feature of my improvement I regard as novel and of great importance.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cavity, or recess D, in the cast portion of the plow-point, for the purpose of facilitating thc removal oi' the steel portion of such point, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to thisnesses.
CHARLES B. KEER. Witnesses:
l J. WALTER PYNE,
B. F. LITTLE.
