GAS AND eAsoLENE ENGINE.
Application filed October 24, 1906. Serial No. 340,355.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
mary object the provision of novel means for automatically governing the explosions of an englne by the speed of the same.
My invention aims to provide positive and 1 reliable means for effecting the perfect operation of an engine with a minimum of ex penditure of fuel. To this end, I have devised a clutch-actuated mechanism in combination with a valve and ignition device for controlling the supply and consumption of fuel used in connection with the engine. Upon the basis of this combination, the application comprehends the embodiment of the above combination for one specific purpose, namely the cessation of explosions after .the engine has reached a redetermined speed, and a resumption of tlie explosions upon the engine having attained its normal condition or speed.
My invention further aims to provide a novel engine frame or casing for protecting the working mechanism of the engine and permitting easy access thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended .claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved engine, a portion of the casing and the gasolene tank thereof being removed, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the engine, the gasolene tank being restored, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of the engine, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a portion of the engine, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the line ww of Fig.
3, Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the engine,
partly broken away, Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of part of the clutch mechanism, Fig. 8 is an elevation of a spark igniter, Fig. 9 is a plan of the same, Fig. 10 is a detail sectional view enlarged of a portion of one of the gear wheels illustrating the arrangement of the adjustable block carried thereby.
My improvement consists of a suitable foundation or bed plate 1 upon which is mounted the engine frame or casing, the frame comprises a standard 2 carrying a hollow casing 3 which terminates in an integral cylinder 4 having its outer or ignition end 5 surrounded by a water jacket 6, communicating with an integral water reservoir 7 extending upwardly from the cylinder 4. The casing 3 is formed with bearings 8, and with an opening 9, whereby easy access may be had to the interior of the same. The casing 3 serves as a closure to the crank and the connecting rod leading to the piston of the engine, the casing being closed by a lid or cover 11 hinged to the casing, as at 12 and connected to the casing at one side is a housing 10.
J ournaled in the bearings 8 is a crank shaft 14 connecting with a rod 15, which is trunnioned in a piston head 16 that operates within the cylinder 4. Upon the ends of the shaft 14 are mounted wheels 17 and 18, one of said wheels serving as a balance wheel, while the other wheel serves as a belt wheel.
Transversely of the housing 10 and parallel with the shaft 14 is journaled a shaft 19, upon which is mounted a flanged gear wheel 20 meshing with a gear wheel 21 keyed upon the shaft 14, contiguous to the wheel 18. The flanged gear wheel 20 is provided with diametrically opposed lugs 22, and pivoted in said lugs are weighted bell crank levers 23, the ends of said levers engaging a clutch member 24 slidably keyed upon the shaft 19. The weighted ends 25 of the bell crank levers 23 are arranged to be influenced by the centrifu al force'eXerted b the revolving gear wheel 20 and thereby a apted to actuate the clutch member 24. In this manner the speed of my improved engine governs the move ment of the clutch member 24 and the mechanism actuated by the same.
sleeve 24.- Oonriecting with the end 27 of the lever 26 is a depending link 28, which is mounted in the end of a shaft 29, revolubly mounted in a boss 30, carried by the housing 10. The outer end of the shaft 29 is provided with a crank arm 31 through the lower end of which passes a rod 32, carried by the housing 10. Upon the rod 32 ismounted a spring 33 adapted, through the medium of the shaft 29, to maintain the sleeve 24 in close proximity to the gear wheel 20. The outer notched end of the lever 26 serves a function which will be presently described.
The water jacket 6 upon one side is enlarged, as at 34 to accommodate the gaso lene exhaust and inlet elements of my improved engine. In the jacket 6 is formed a curved exhaust passage 35, communicating with the cylinder 5 by a port 36. The junction of the passage 35 and port 36 forms a valve seat 37 for a valve 38, said valve being carried by a rod 39 extending through a sleeve 40 formed in the acket 6. The end of the rod 39 is connected by nuts 41 to a plate 42, slidably mounted through the housing 10. In the end of the plate 42 is journaled a roller 43 adapted to engage with an eccentric disk 44 fixed upon the shaft 19. Through the medium of the disk 44, plate 42 and rod 39, the valve 38 is opened. Secured to the plate 42 is an arm 45 adapted to be engaged by the lever 26, said lever serving functionally as a detent to withhold the valve 38 from the seat 37.
Disposed upon the rod 39, between the nuts 41 and the acket 6 is a coiled spring 46, adapted to close the valve 38. Mounted between the nuts 41 is an arm 47 carrying an insulated finger 48, adapted to contact with an ad ustable beveled block 49, carried by the gear wheel 20.
Formed in the water jacket 6 is a bore 50 communicating with the port 36. In the bore is mounted an inlet valve casing 51 having a spring held valve 52 alternately actuated with relation to the valve 38. Connecting with the valve casing 51 is a pipe 53, carrying a mixer 54 of a conventional form adapted to correctly proportion and thoroughly mix the charge of gasolene and air.
' The mixer 54 is connected by a pipe 55 to a gravity feed gasolene tank 56, carried above the water reservoir 7.
In the explosion end 5 of the cylinder 4 is mounted an electric igniter 57, through which an electric current passes from water proof dry batteries, located in a box 58 at one end of the engine. The electric current is controlled by a spark coil located in a water proof case 59, and by a switch 60.
The wiring between the various parts of my engine is as follows: The batteries in the box 58 are connected to the engine frame or casing 3 by a wire 61, and to the switch 60 by a wire 62. The switch connects with the spark coil within the casing 59 by a wire 63, while another wire 64 connects said coil with the finger 48. The igniter 57 connects with the spark coil by a wire 65, and upon said wire is located a spark indicator 66. The indicator comprises two insulated plates 67 having a sight opening 68. Between the plates 67 are secured copper terminals 69, that connect with the wire 65. The electric current is adapted to jump from one terminal to another, whereby the sparking of the igniter can be indirectly observed.
In connection with my improved engine, I use a bearing 70 for the cylinder 4, a lubricator71, and an exhaust mufiler 72.
Operation. We will assume that a charge of mixed air and gasolene has been admitted to the explosion end 5 of the cylinder 4 through the port 36, and has been ignited to drive the piston 16 forward. The shaft 14 will be revolved through the medium of the piston rod 15, imparting a rotary movement to the shaft 19 and the gear wheel 20 mounted thereon. The impetus or centrifugal force of the gear wheel 20 will move the sleeve 24 inwardly towards the gear wheel 20, this being accomplished through the weighted bell crank levers 23. As the sleeve 24 is so moved, the lever 26 is moved to engage the arm 45 of the plate 42. moved outwardly by the eccentric disk 44 engaging the roller 43 of the arm 42, the outward movement of the plate 42 being previous to the movement of the lever 26, whereby when the plate 42 is about to return to its normal position, the end of the lever 26 will retard the movement of saiclplate. By holding the plate 42, the exhaust valve 38 is held in an open position and thus allow ing the cylinder 4 to exhaust. with the movement of the elements just described, the electric circuit which passes through the igniter 57 is broken and remains broken until the next injection of mixed gasolene and air into the cylinder of the engine. The-first explosion within the cylinder 4 of the engine gives the engine sull icien t impetus to operate for a short period of time, and in order that the speed at which the engine is operated may govern the detonations of the engine, I employ the adjustable block 49, the arm 47 and the finger 48, the bell crank levers 23 carried by the gear wheel 20 being weighted, so that the sleeve 24 will assume its normal position when the revolutions of the engine have reached a predetermined speed. As the engine runs down the sleeve 24 returns to its normal position, moving the lever 26 and allowing the plate 42 and arm 45 to return to their normal positions. This is accomplished by the spring 46. As the plate 42 returns to its normal position, the finger 48 is moved in The arm 45 is Simultaneous a circuit is completed through the batteries, sparking coil and igniter previously described. Simultaneous with the moving of the finger 48, the exhaust valve'3-8 is closed 1 and the movement of this valve together with the piston 16, creates a suction which opens the inlet valve52, thus allowing the charge of mixed gasolene. and air to enter the cylinder 4. The return movement of the piston 16 compresses the charge, and the completing of the electric circuit by the finger 48 causes the igniter to fire the gasolene and air. I have made the block 49 adjustable, whereby the detonations within the cylinder 4 may be regulated, either early or late, with relation to the charge of gasolene and air admitted to the cylinder.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have devised an engine wherein a maximum amount of power may be derived from a minimum expenditure of fuel, also a saving in the wearing parts of the cylinder, owing to the fact that the ex losions cease when the engine has reache a predetermined speed.
I do not care to confine myself to the type of engine in connection with which the explosion regulating mechanism is employed, as this feature of my invention is applicable to various types of engines wherein ignition devices are used.
