Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1.908.
Applieaaon aiea April 1a, 190s. serial No. 426,767.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos R. Buss, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing in Lowell, 1n the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Induction-Coils, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanymg drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The present invention relates to an induction coil, and is embodied in a Icoil of novel construction and arrangement in which the secondary Winding is made up of a plurality of separable units, whereby the 'original manufacture of the coil is facilitated, and the repair of an injured coil is capable of being accomplished Without necessarily re- Winding the coil, since the defective unit can be replaced by another.
The invention relates further to details of construction and arrangement whereby the complete coil can be assembled and inclosed in a casing having the external contact members and binding posts connected therewith without the necessity of making internal connections.`
Figure 1 is a vertical setion of a complete coil embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of, one of the units of the secondary Winding. j
In the construction shown, the secondary consists of four units, these units comprising spools a each containing a coil of fine wire a2 wound thereon, it being practicable to wind the coil by means of an ordinary spooling machine. The spools are provided With central apertures a3 of such size and shape as to fit closely upon the rimary member which consists of the core li)and the low resistance winding b2 thereon.
The terminals of the high resistance coil unit a2 are brought through the ends of the spool a, and connected with external contact members or springs a4 which are herein shown (Fig. 2) as pieces of sheet metal connect'ed at one end with the s ool and sprung away from the surface of t e spool at the disconnected end. These contact members are uniformly arranged on the several spools, so that when the units are assembled upon the primary member, the contact member at the end of one spool will make electrical contact With the contact member at the end of the adjacent spool, thus connecting the units into a continuousv coil yfrom one end Aof the induction coil to the other.
The coil thus assembled is inclosed in a box or casing c which is preferably filled in with paraffin, or similar substance, around` the coil after the coil has been placed in position therein. The upper yand lower members c2 and c3 of the casing are provided with contact plates or springs c20 and e30 which are connected through the outsidev with binding posts or simllar terminal devices, contact being made with the final terminals of the secondary coil through the springs on the outer spools.
By this construction, the units of the secondary are complete in themselves, and, at the same time, may be assembledeasily, and also incased without trouble, since the electrical contacts throughout are made by simply placing the several parts in their pro er position.
.C aims.
1. An induction coil comprising a rimary Winding; and a secondary Win ing composed of units each of Which consists of a coil of Wire Wound on a s ool provided at opposite ends with externa contact members connected, respectively, With the terminals of the Winding.
2. In an inducton coil, the combination with the primary member; of.. a secondary member each comprising a spool adapted to t over the primary member, a Winding on said spool, and contact plates located on the outside ends of each spool and connected with the terminals of the Wire Wound on the spool. 3. In an induction coil, the combination With the primary member; of a secondary member consisting of units having individual coils Wound thereon, with external contact devices to connect the windings of adjacent spools; and an inclosing case having internal contact members at opposite'ends thereof to engage the contact members at the outer ends ofthe end spools of the secondary.
consisting of a plurality of unitsl 14. The herein deseribed unit for a seeond-4 In testimony whereof, I have signed my ary ooil which consists of a. spool having a. name to this specification in the presence of central a, erture; a ooil of wire Wound on, two subscribing Witnesses.
