CLOSURE For. CONTAINING VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filedmarch 21', 1907. Serial nmaeanai.
PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION To all whom 'it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EUGENE D. CHELLIs, 1 of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Containing Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for ves sels; and particularl to a closure adapted to be applied to stoc vessels subject to :frequent opening but required to be kept tigb tly sealed when closed. 1 5
In devices of this sort it is desirable .that the closure fit the. mouth of the vessel tightly and when closed that it be locked. on the mouth in such a way that' it will stand any outward strain tending to force it off.
' To the end above indicated I have deploy a ca which engages the interior pf'the ,tively engages the exterior of the vessel ock the entire cap in place.
The structure and principle of this devicewill be more fully set' forth in the s ecificawhich form apart thereof 1 have illustrated a closure embodying m invention.
In these drawings: igure 1, is a view of this closure in place on a bottle. Fig. 2-, a lan view of the closure removed from the ottle. Fig. 3, a similar view, with the closure open. Fig. -4, afront view of the closure removed. Fig. 5, a similar view open, and Fig. 6, a transverse vertical section of cap and bottle as shown in Fig. 1. 1 indicates an ordinary stock bottle having a depressed portion 2 on its neck-leavin a rim or shoulder 3 about the mouth thereo 4 is a cap plate having a. central opening 5 therein and a depending flange 6 surround- 7 is a depression about the ope' 5 and adapted to contain an annular pac 8. 9 is a suitable packing .to surround the flange 6 and give a tight fit between said 10 is a cover pivoted to the plate 4 at 11 and laterally SW1 thereon to cover and uncover the same. he cover 10 is provided with a depending locking lip 12 on its circumference opposite to the pivot 11 and preferably with a second locking lip 13 of a similar nature but arranged on one side of the cover to atford"additional engagement rawingsl withthe bottle neck and at the same form a stop for the cover 10.
" 14 and 15 are cooperating indented catches on the cover and late respectively for holdin the cover in c osed position.
n appl 'ng the cap to a bottle the pack ing 9 is p acedabout the flange 6 and with the-cover 10 open the ca is forced onto the mouth of the bottle wit the flange within its mouth and the packing 9 compressed between it and the interior surface of the neck. The plate is thus' held from any lateral movement.
The cover 10 is closed by laterally swinging the same until the locking lips 12 and 13 are in position-engaging the shoulder 3. In
this position the cap will beheld positively vention.
What I therefore claim and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the class described consisting of a plate, means for engaging the mouth of avessel internally, a cover pivoted to said plate. and adapted to be swung laterally thereon, and means on said cover to engage Patented March IY, 1908.
time
an exterior shoulder on a-vessel neck when in closed position. y
2. A device of the class described consisting of a plate, a depending flange for engaging the mouth ofa .vessel internally, acover pivoted to said lplate and adapted to be swung laterally t ereon, and means on said cover to engage an exterior shoulder on a vessel neck when in closed position.
3. Adevice of the class described consisting of a plate having a central opening therein, a depending ange for engaging the ngouth of a vessel internally, a cover-pivoted to said plate and adapted to be swung laterally thereon, and means on said cover to engage an exterior shoulder on a vessel neck when in closed osition.
1. A, closure 'or a containing vessel having a shoulder about its mouth comprising a cap consisting of a plate having a central opening therein, a depending flange for engaging the mouth of the vessel internally, a packing between said flange and the interior of the vessel mouth, a cover pivoted to said plate and adapted to be swung laterally thereon, and a lip on said cover to engage the shoulder when in a closed position.
3 5. In a closure for containing vessels, a pair of members, means for providing relative movement I between said members, means on one member for internally engaging the mouth of a vessel and on the other of said members to engage an exterior shoulder 0 on a vessel neck w ensaid members are 111 closed position.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
