Description
N. S. DUNAWAY.
WHEBLED SGRAPER. APPLICATION FILED we. 6-. 1907.
PATENTED M BJ 1908.
NORMAN s. DUNAWAY, or PELHAM, ALABAMA.
WHEELED SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application filed August 6, 1907. Serial No. 387,373.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN S. DUNAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented a Wheeled Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in wheeled scrapers or scoops employed in excavating, and relates more especially to the provision of certain devices or attachments to facilitate the operation of the latch devices.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a wheeled scraper or scoop with certain attachments or springs for the purpose of causing a positive connection between the scoop or pan and the catch-bars with which it is adapted to engage in the operation of lifting the scoop or pan for carrying the dirt and in the operation of disposing said scoop or pan to dump the dirt or contents.
The invention consists, therefore, in the combination with the arts of the scoop of certain attachments of particular construction, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheeled scraper or scoop showing the application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the application of the spring device employed in connection with the lifting latch-bar. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the spring employed in connection with the front latch-bar which supports the scoop in dumping position. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the spring used in connection with the lifting latch-bar.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, in which I have shown one form of wheeled scraper or scoop, 5 designates the Wheels, which are journaled on the ends of an arched axle 6, and from the latter is supported the scoop or pan 7. Bolted to the arched axle 6 are bars 8 which are pivoted at their forward ends to straps 9 attached to the forward portion of the scoop or pan, and said bars are attached to a handle-barlO secured at its forward end to the central portion of the arched axle, being curved upward to permit of the required movement of the scoop in dumping.
The draft appliances, to which the draftanimals are attached are connected at their rear ends to the scoop, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and to the cross-bar 11 of the draft-appliances is pivoted a latch-bar 12 which is adapted to support the scoop or pan in the dumplng position.
In order to insure the proper operation of the latch-bar 12 I attach to the same a helical spring 13, said spring being secured at one end to the latch-bar and at the other end to the cross-bar 11 of the draft-appliances, and acts to exert a rearward yielding movement of the bar so that it will positively engage the catch-plate 14 at the'rear end of the scoop and be held firmly in such engagement.
The handle-bar 10 of the machine is provided with the usual pivoted latch-bar 15 having a rearwardly projecting rod 15 by which it is operated to disengage the pan, said latch-bar being adapted to engage the catch-plate 14 at the rear end of said pan when the handle-bar is lowered for the purpose of lifting the scoop or pan, and so that the latter may be carried by the wheels. In order to insure a positive engagement of the latch-bar 15 I provide an attachment or spring device which I shall now proceed to describe. This attachment or spring device is constructed so that it may be readily applied, and therefore comprises a coiled spring 17 and extended end members 18 and 19; one of said members, as 18, terminating in an eye 18 which engages the operatingrod 15 of the latch-bar 15, while the other member, as 19, is provided with a loop portion 19 and a bent end 19*, said loop portion engaging the pivot-bolt 20 of the latchbar while the bent end engages the lower edge of the scoop supporting bar to hold the device in position.
It will be readily seen that in applying the spring device to the latch-bar 15 it is only necessary to slip one end of the same upon the rod 15*, and then slip the other end over the end of the pivot-bar after removing the nut, and when the nut is again applied on the bolt the bent end engaging the lower edge of the supporting-bar will prevent disengagement in case the nut should become loose.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that by the employment of the spring devices which are attached to the latch-bars the operation of the latter will be more positive, and will be such as to hold the scoop or pan in the positions to which it is swung in both carrying the dirt and in dumping it.
In the operation, after the scoop or pan has been filled the handle-bar 10 is lowered to lift the scoop or pan, and when the latch-bar 15 engages the catch 16 the said scoop or pan will be held in an elevated position or above the ground so that the dirt may be carried by the wheels to the place of dumping. In this operation the spring 17 will securely hold the latch-bar 15 in engagement with the scoop and so that it will not be accidentally disengaged by the j olting of the machine in passing over the ground.
When it is desired to dump the contents of the scoop or pan the handle-bar 10, which is. in engagement with the rear end of the scoop or pan is raised and swung forward until the forward latch-bar 12 engages the catch-plate 14 when the scoop or pan will be disposed in its dumping position with its open end rearward. In this position of the parts the spring 13 serves to hold the latchbar 12 in engagement With the pan and so that the open end of the latter will not swing down and engage the ground.
From the foregoing it will be seen therefore that I provide simple and eflective devices which will cause a positive operation of the scoop and Will prevent the same from becoming accidentally disengaged from the latch-bars.
l Though I have herein shown myinvention as applied to a Pi'LltlGUlfil style of wheeled scraper or scoop it will be understood that it might be applied to a scoop or scraper constructed slightly different from that herein shown but provided with latch-bars for suptions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a wheeled scraper or scoop, the combination with the arched axle, handle-bars and scoop supported by the latter, of a latchbar pivoted to the handle-bars and having a rearwardly projecting rod, a spring having an end member with an eye which engages the rod and an end member with a loop portion engaging the pivot-bolt of the latch-bar and a bent end engaging the lower edge of the handle-bar, substantially as herein shown and described.
