Description

JOHN FAHRNEY, GF BOONSBOROUGH, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 88,150, dated Ma/rch 23, 1,869. i
IMPROVED MOP-HEAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
-To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN FABRNEY, of Boonsborough, in the county of Washington, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved Mop-Head;
and I-do hereby declare that the following is a full,v
y view.
The objectof this invention is to provide for public tuse a neat, simple, and durable mop11ead,to which the mop can be instantaneously attached without the necessity of stooping or touching it with the? hands, even though the mop, at the time, be lying on the door, or in the wash-tub.
This object is accomplished in the most simple and practical manner, by the use of a sliding, hooked rod, or bar, a, in connection with a bent arm, or shoulder, b, the mop-handlec, and aspring-ratchet d, in the manner clearly shown by the drawings.
The bar slides under the straps, or clasps e e, longi-A tudinally with the handle, so as to open the hook, or close it aga-inst the brace, or shoulder b, as shown in the drawin f. It has a lievelled tooth, or catch n, on its upper end, whichA engages with the spring-rack, unless the latter be lifted out of its way by means of the curved part d', and prevents the hook from receding from the shoulder b, and thereby releasing the mop. f
The rack itself .may-be a spring, or a separate spring,
s, may be employed, made of metal, rubber, or other suitable material. In operation, if the person using the mop wishes to disengage the clot-h from the mop-headshe simply lifts the ratchet (l out of connection with the rod a. The latter slides ont, and releases the mop at once.
The work of thus disengaging the mop and head is only of an instant, and can be performed by catching the operators toe under the part d', or by catching the latter over the edge of the tub, or over any other fixture which happens to be conveniently near.
, The work of uniting the mop and head is still easier, l
the operator having only to hook, or fish up the cloth from the water, or from the door, by means of hook a, and then, placing the convex end of the hook against the floor, or bottom of the tub, to press the handle down against it until the end of the hook comes in contact with the shoulder b. This will confine the mop cloth securely in place, and the spring-rack will then engage with the tooth` n, and hold it there,
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mop-head above described, consisting of the hook ,shoulder b, handle c, and a spring-catch arrangement, n d, constructed to operate together, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN FAHRNEY.
