HAT RUTEGTOR. APPLmATIoN FILED JULY 12.1907.

Application iiled July 12, 190'7.
Be it known that l, ALBERT G. KINER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain neuv 4and useful Im- `orovements in Hat-Protectors, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to devices'tor affording protection to head apparel, and its objects are to provide a protective coveringv for ladies hats that can be readily applied and removed; .to furnish a covering for the purpose stated that will beimpervious to rain,
moisture or dust; to supply an elastic covering of lightweight that Will not injure the hat or'it's delicate or fragile trimmings; to supply means-for permitting the securing of the hat upon the head of the wearer While the cover is in place, and to facilitate the removal of the hat and cover Without requiring the latter to be disturbed or detached.
it will be readily understood that an elastic covering which is to be applied so as to though the cover fabric is of entirely cover a hat and its Jfrail ornaments Will require considerable care in its application to prevent injury to the latter even light Weight,
' and its roper application will therefore be the hat is removed trom the head.
a diiiicu t matter if attempted by the wearer when the hat is position upon the head.
vAs previously designed all such covers pre-` sent this difficulty, and While the applic-ation of the cover is readily accomplished when rlhis previous assembling of thearticles renders it necessary to abandon the usual method of securing the hat to the head by the usual hat ins or requires that the hat should be iirst iastened upon the head, and the coverai'ter- Wards laced thereover.
Additional objects of my invention are to provide a simple, eiiicient and durable hat covering of suiiciently light Weight to prevent injury to the trimmings and one that can be readily folded or rolled into a small compass and may be then placed in a bag or pocket thus being at hand 'when Wanted, the characterl of the material used also permitting the article to be manufactured economi ically.
I accomplish the above results by employing the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part or' this applin cation and Which illustrates my improved hat protector in a perspective view.
' Referring to the drawing in detail, the nui Speccation of Letters Patent.

meral 1.0 indicates themain body portion of a hat protector adapted to be placed over a hat. This body portion is preferably formed of thin sheet rubber a single piece suilicing to include the entire structure so that the protection'aiiorded will extend to the ornamentations of the crovvn and all parts of the frame as Well.
The device its preferred embodiment isl in the form of a bag or cap, of highlyT elastic material, conical in shape, and having a contracted elastic mouth or neck ll the material at this point being of increased thickness so that it will contract more iirmly When stretched than the body portion, thus forming a closure to prevent the entrance of floating ,dust or moisture into the interior of said body.4 The contracted portion is supplied with a thickened selvage or rim 'l2 which has the form oi a flange and serves the oiiice of a gathering string, retaining the covering firmly in position.
The universal custom oi' securing ladies hats upon the headby means of hat pins renders it desirable to avoid puncturingthe protective fabric thereby which Would de- Jfeat the object ot such covering by 'filling it With a multiplicit'jvv of holes and thus destroying its integrity. ri`he only method of preventing this injury in the prevalent forms oi hat protectors, as previously stated, is to apply the covering after the hat has been fastened on the head vvith pins, and also removing the cover before the pins are Wit-hdravvn. In order to avoid this undesirable procedure, l provide apertures lf3 in the walls ot the body portion conveniently lou cated upon opposite sides thereof, so as to he available i'or the introduction and removal oi the retaining pins. These openi ings are provided. with closures li in the torni of doors or ilaps, suited in 'form and dimensions to completely cover their corre spending apertures. l prefer to maire said apertures circular in outline and construct the flaps oi the same material as the main structure. These iiaps are hinged at l5 to the body Wall above the openingsand the hinges may be ot a separate piece or fabric or the flaps may be joined directly/to the body, their elasticity serving to produce a sufficiently close joint, and to further prevent danger ot the entrance oi dust u or moisture i prefer to construct the said 'flaps the openings.
