Description

J. R. JONES.
Harvester Reel.
Pa ten tedfMarch 23, 1869.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. B. JONES, OF OLARKSVILLE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 88,043, dated March 23, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. It. J ONEs, of Olarksville, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in reels for harvesters; and consists in an arran gement whereby the heaters may be readily changed from one position to another for acting on the grain, to straighten it or incline it to the right direction when it leans in any direction tending to make it cut disadvantageously.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a reel constructed according to my improvement, and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The beaters A are made in two parts, and
the arms Bare hinged to the hubs 0. Each pair is connected by a rod, D, running parallel with the shaft, and each arm is provided near the hub with an arm, E, rigidly secured thereto, and hooking, at its outer end, to a stud, F, projecting from the hubs. The arms adjacent to the machine are provided with hooks or bent fingers G, which engage a ring, H, supported in a fixed position by rods I, projecting from the framing. The said ring is made in two parts, and the two jointed together at the opposite points a a. One part of the ring is free to oscillate on the other fixed part, and is connected by a rod, 6, to the handlever d, under the control of the operator. The said movable part c of the ring is so arranged that the fingers G pass the center of the same at about the time they engage the grain, and if it leans to the right or left of the machine the said arms, when engaging the grain, may be moved in either direction, as required, to gather the grain and deflect it in the right direction. At the same time that the arms B are moved in this manner, the short arms E, swinging around their fixed studs F, oscillate the arms B, and cause the beaters to assume an angular line with reference to the cutter-bar, calculated to facilitate the proper gathering of the grain. Any other preferred device may be employed for effecting the oscillation.
To facilitate the removal and substitution. of other arms when broken, socketed joints L, made of metal, are provided for the reception of the inner ends of the said arms, which are secured therein by pins suitably arranged to be readily removed.
The hand-lever d is provided with a springpin, f, forsecuring it to hold the heaters in the position required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The boaters A, supported on arms hinged to the hub, and combined with a movable guide-rin g capable of guiding them laterally in either direction, substantially as specified.
2. The beater-s A, supported on arms hinged to the hub, and combined with a movable guide-rin g and a mechanism for oscillating the said arms, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the inner set of arms, B, connected to the outer set by rods D, and having the hooked fingers G, of the jointed guiding-ring e, substantially as specified.
J. R. JONES.
