Be it known that I, WINNE GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon Springs, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fasteners adapted for use on overshoes and outer foot wear, canvas, slippers, waterproofs, horse blankets, gloves, mittens and other articles and it consist in the construction, combination and arrangement of-de vices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing the tongue member in partially opened position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same showing the tongue member in closed position. i

My improved fastener comprises a base member 1 for attachment to one side of the article to be fastened and. a loop or tongue member 2 which is pivotally connected to the said base member and is adapted to be engaged with the other side or end of the article to be fastened. The base member is here shown as made of a single piece of wire bent to form a main portion 3 which is here shown as quadrangular in shape, a pair of parallel arms 4 project from one side of the said main portion and a pair of studs 5 which are bent outwardly from and are disposed at right angles to the said arms 4 and are provided with eyes. The parallel arms 4 should be ofiset near the studs 5 so that the portion of tongue shown at 8 will spring out and lock tongue in closed position. The loop or tongue 1- is also made of a single piece of wire doubled to form the main portion 7 and having its ends bent at right angles to the main portion, as at 8, to form arms, said arms being oifset from the inner corners of the main portion to provide pivots 9 which pass through and turn in the eyes of studs 5. Thereby, the tongue or loop member is pivotally connected to the base member.

The tongue may be passed through a suitable button hole, eye, or keeper or other device with which the article on which the fastener is used is provided. The article indicated at a, in Fig. 1, is shown as provided with a hinged keeper 1) provided with a number of adjusting openings 0 through any one of which the main portion 7 of the loop or tongue member may be, passed. Such loop or tongue -member must be turned outwardly as shown in Fig. 2 before the keeper is applied thereto, and after the keeper has been applied to the tongue and moved inwardly to the inner end of the tongue, the latter is turned toward the base member 1 which causes such loop or tongue member to act as a lever to draw the keeper toward the base member and to move the keeper inwardly over the eyes 6 and into engagement with the outer sides of the studs 5 of the base member and the arms 8 of the tongue member so that the tension of the article on which the fastener is used will cause such arms 8 to maintain the loop or tongue member in closed position, as shown in Fig. 1 and prevent the same from swinging outwardly and unfastening the article. When it is desiredto unfasten the article, this may be accomplished by merely turning the loop or tongue member outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, when the keeper or other engaging device of the article may be readily ilipped through the said tongue or loop mem- Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The herein described fastener comprising a base member made of a single piece of wire bent to form a main portion, parallel arms extending from one side thereof, outturned studs projecting from said arms, and eyes at the outer ends of said studs, and a tongue also made of a single piece of wire doubled to form a main portion having pivot devices bent laterally through the inner corners of such main portion to engage the eyes of the base member and arms extending radially from such pivot devices to lie sub stantially in common plane of the studs of the base member when such tongue is turned to a closed position, substantially parallel with such base member.
