SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fol li11ga1u-l Taping Guides for Sewing-Machineaof which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the let ters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in sewing machines, of the type known as the Union Special Yoke Rutlling Machine, such as illustarted in an application filed by R. G. Woodward, July 20, 1898, Serial No. 686,444 patented July 31, 1900, No. 655,143, to which patent, reference is made for understanding of the operation of the ruifling mechanism.
The present inventioncomprises a sewing machine having suitable stitch forming mechanism and a ruffling mechanism with means for guiding the edge of the fabric to be ruffled and of the fabric to which the ruflled portion is to be secured to the stitch forming mechanism with means for covering or bindingthe raw edge of the ruffled piece, this means for covering the raw edge being herein shown as a tape, whereby said rough edge of thefabric to be ruffled may be covered and the folding, guiding, rufiling, sewing and covering of the seam being all accomplished in a continuous operation.
l urthern1ore, the invention comprises a folding guide especially constructed for this machine.
The invention is illustrated, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a union special yoke ruflling machine, showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my inmrovcd. folding guide and tape guide; Fig. 3 is an endview of the same; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view partly brokenaway, showing the work accomplished by the use of this invention.
In these drawings, the needle lever A, gooseneck B, ruliiing.mechanism clot h plate D, needle bar E, presser bar F, presser foot G, needle a, and other-pants are similar to those illustrated in the aforesaid application.
H represents a plate secured to the cloth plate of the machine and having a raised portion 5 with a downwardly slo ).ing part c to which is attached as shown in Fig. 2 by I, 4 V v ur assienoero THE union SPECIAL sewn: iigieiimii j I ooM1 anv 01 cn oieo, tninoisn CORPORATION or ILLINOIS,

Projecting 'wardly from the horizontal wall It is the wall m, having the horizontal parts ie which: are provided with a downwardly turned portion which as ada ted to press the materials to be sewed toget 1er firmly just as they pass under the action of the presser foot. movably attached to the plate H is a plate n which is formed with or carries the tape g guide 0.
In operation, the edge of the piece of fabric to be ruffled is laid in the guiding recess formed by the wallsf, g, and h, the edge of the upper piece of fabric is folded in and guided by the walls m, Ir, i, and h, and the tape is fed through the slot 0, which in Fig. 1 is shown as closed, while in Fig. 3 the lower wall of said tape slot is separated. As the feed of the sewing machine progresses the parts are all fed to the sewing mechanism, the upper,piece of fabric folded and overlapped with the single thickness which is ruffled and the parts united and the seam taped, all in one operation.
In Fig. 4, 1 represents the upper fabric, 2'
I the tape and 3 the piece which is ruliied and its raw edge covered by the tape.
Various minor modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The herein described folding guidefor sewing machines, comprising .a base piece adapted to be secured to the work plate of the sewing machine having a raised portion,
. a folding guide portion secured to said raised portion" and having a bottom wall, a vertical wall and an upper hozizontal wall forming a. recess to receive the edge of a fabric, a second upwardly turned wall, a lip as j, a vertical wall '11: having the oppositely extending horizontal portion Ir, below the lip, and a tape guide below the folding guide attached to said base piece adjacent the raised portion;
substantially as described.
2. The herein described folding g ide for sewing machines, comprising a bzcs piece the sewing machine having a raised'portion, a folding guide portion secured to-said raised portion and having a bottom wall',-a vertical wall and an upper hozizontal wall forming a recess to receive the edge of afabric, a second upwardly turned wall, a lip as i, a vertical 'wallm having the oppositely extending horizontal portion c, below the l1 and having at the forward end a downwardly turned tongue as Z; and a tape guide attached to said base piece adjacent the raised, portion and below the folding guide substantiall as described.
3. The herein described fo ding and guidi'ng attachment for rufili ng and sewing machines,- comprising a ruffiing device and means for operating it, a base piece adapted to be attached to the sewing. machine and having a raised portion, a'stripper plate secured to said raised portion, and a folding guide having recesses arranged one above the other and opposed to each other, the lower of said recesses being arranged in a plane with the top of the stripper blade over which one layer of the goods to be sewed passes,and 'a tape guide arranged below said recess and attached to the base iece adjacent the raised portion substantia y as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
