Description

PATENTED MAY 26, 1908.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1908.
linens we snrronrrne Specification of Letters Patent.
. d: H. COMPANfY, OF CHICAGO DOB-KAN GER TR iGKS.
Patented tre 2e, ioos= Application filed March 6, 1908. Serial No. (19,469,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. l-loPKINs, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Supporting Door-Hanger. Tracks, oi which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accomo erlying drawing, forming part of this speci- '1c9ltion.
The present invention has for its object to provide improved means ior-niovably sup.- porting the doors of railway cars, and the invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification. Figure 1 is a view in vertical section through aportion of a railway freight car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a slightly Inodified form of the invention. Fig. 3 is of view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a further inodifled embodiment of the invention. Fig. 4 is a front view upon a reduced scale of the upper portion of a car having my invention applied thereto. As shown, my invention is embodiedv in what is known'as an all metal car, but it will be manifest that it is-applicnble also to railway cars of the ordinary ty )e. 7.designates the rail (preferl ')l v a. channel bar) extending from end to end of the car heneath the coves of the roof Below the rail 7 is formcd the usual doorway, in front of which will. slide the door 9 which, as show 11, is formed of plate nictnl. To the upper portion of the door 9 are secured, us at), the hangers ll. As shown in Fig. 1, each of the hangers ll is provided at its up )cr end with "a hood 12 within which is journalcd u bearing roller 13, this hearing roller being mounted upon a spindle 14. that projects inwardly from the hood 12. Each of the hearing rollers 13 rests upon a track 15 formed of metal and, as shown in Fig. 1, this track has a depending flange l6 inside of which extends the upwardly projecting lug 18 that is formed upon the hanger H. v This lug 18 serves to guard against the accidental passage of the roller 13 from the track The track 15 will. extend above the door- Way of the our and integral with this truck 15 is formed a part 2!) that oflords meanswhereby the truck will be securedto the body of thecar. Preferably, and as SliOWll in. the several views of the drawing, the top of the suspension part 20 of the track has formed so integral therewith inwardly and downwordlbent flenges 2i and 22 that interlock/wit the plate 7 of the body.
By providing the track 15= with integral nieens whereby it may be connectedwitli 5 and sustained from t is body of the oergthe necessity of employing separate brackets for supporting the track 15 avoided; trodes these several parts are rolled from 8. single plate of metal, they can be very cheaply and 7o conveniently made and will aiiord a strong and durable construction, Moreover, by forming the/part 20 at its top with means whereby it may interlock with or hook on to a part of the car body, a sim lo and efiicient means is provided wherebytne rock can be quickly placed in position and can be securely and rigidlyretcined.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the plate 7 of the car body has interlocked therewith the flanges 21 end 22 of the track suspension part 20, but in this embodi nent of the invention the track 15 is formed, by an upwardly bent i'lnnge integral with the part 20. Upon this track 15 will rest each of the grooved hearing rollers 13 that sustlllll the car-door h. Each of the rollers 13 is journalcd at the upper end. of a hanger 11' that is secured, as at 10, to the car. door 9.
in the form or the invention shown in Fig. 3, the plate 7 u that extends above the doorway of the car consist s of a flat metal plate with the upper edge of which interlock the hinges 21 and 22. of the track suspension member 20. in. this form of the invention the track 15* is formed integral with. the bottom oi the suspension member 20 and upon this track rests each of the bearing rollers 13*. Each bearing roller 13 is journaledzat the upper end of the hanger ii that is-secured as at 10 to the car door 9. In this last described form of the invention a short an le bar 25 is fastened to undprojects inwar ly from the upper portion of the car doorQ, the
upper port of this angle bar engaging with the lower portion of the plate '7? and serving to hold the car door against displacement.
in the vcrol l'ornlsol thcinvcntionabove dcscribed,- the track has formed integral therewith a; suspension nicnibcr whereby it is l lo connected to the body of the ear and integral With the top of this suspension member are also prefere biy formed flanges e'de ted to interlock with a portion of the ear ody; and with any of the several forms of the invention the necessity for employing se arate brackets is avoided and a strong, durab e and efiicient means is provided for connecting the door track with the body of the car.
' It is manifest that the precise details of. construction above set out may be varied Without departing from the scope of the invention. 4 l
Having thus described'nly invention, What I claim as new", and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1[ The eonibinetioniwith & car body, of a. track'extending above the doorway and having an integral, ngwerdly extending pert constructed to interlock with a part of the oer body.
2. The combination with a car body, of a track extending above the doorway and heying an integral, upwardly extending suspensien member hevlng e hook-shaped part at 4. The CODlbll'lSttlOn with a car body 0on1; PI1S1Dg'lI1 its construct on a plate extending above the doorway of the car, of a track suspension member extendin over the doorway and-having formed in tegrzil with its lower end a track and with ts upper end a flawed portion adapted to interlock with seid 'plate.
