Description

Letters Patent No. 88,846, dated April 13, 1869.
IMPRovED BALING-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern openings for racks to traverse in and hinging upon these stands by means of links, locking pawls to hold said racks, hooks being pivoted upon the stands to hold the pawls clear of the rocks when required.
Also, in providing traversing bars, having perforated lugs, or projections, for the aforesaid racks to traverse in, depending ends or journals to rest upon workinglevers and locking pawls hinged upon them, to hold the racks and carry them forward when the bars are traversed.
Also, in providing double or compound-working levers, having their parts hinged together and being themselves hinged, by links, upon'the aforesaid stands, and those that act directly upon the traversing-bars and racks,v having two or more seats for the ends or journals of said bars, so that the relative distances of the power and resistance from the fulcrum maybe readily changed.
Also, in providing a series of short slides to close the openings in the press-box, in which the follower-beam traverses, said slides being pushed back in succession as the beam advances by an vincline upon said beam.
In the following more exact description of my improved press, I shall refer to the accompanying drawings', forming part of this specification-- v Figure l being an elevation of one side.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a part ofthe top and side, and of the working-machinery of one end, each end and side of the press being a duplicate of the opposite one.
Figure 3 is a view of the slides as arranged within the press-box.
The base or stand A supports the posts B B, which are connected above by the middle frame G and top frame C.
The' side of the upper part of the press-box E is hinged upon the middle frame and secured by the catches F F, except when dropped for the removal of a pressed bale, or for other purposes, and the top or cover of the box is hinged to the frame C', so as to be opened or thrown back for putting in the material to be pressed.
The stand a is secured upon the cross-beam of the frame C and has a strap, b, pivoted upon it to be slipped over the end of the top beam G of the press to hohl it down, and to be slipped off when it is necessary to open the top of the press.
The toothed pawl c is hung upon the stand a bythe links d d, to lock'or hold the rack e, when raised, said rack passing through the stud j', which is provided with a hook, g, to hold the pawl clear of the rack when the latter is` to be lowered.
Upon the base of the stand a, through which, also, the rack e passes, are pivoted the links h and h', having their lower ends pivoted upon. and supporting respectively the working-levers and i', which are themselves pivoted or hinged together at j.
The lever i is formed of two pieces connected together by the pivots at their ends, (or it may be of one piece, with an open space through it,) so that the rack e may work freely between them, and is provided with two or more seats, la and 7c', for the ends or journals of the traversing bar l, to rest in.
Upon the bar l is hinged, by pivoted links, the toothed pawl m, to engage the rack e, which passes through the studs n n on the bar l, the hook/U being pivoted in the upper stud, to hold the pawl m clear of the rack, when required. l
The crank and pinion p is hinged, by links, upon the bar l, for the purpose of lowering the rack e, when required.
The lower end of the rack e has pivoted upon it the strap c", passing around the follower' beam H, which supports and lifts, when raised, the follower, within the box E.
The slot or openingI, in the side ofthe box,'and in beam by a series of slides, J J, (see fig. 3,)-seoured to the inside of the box by a screw or bolt passing through a slot in the slide, which allows them to traverse; and upon the beam opposite the slides an incline, t, is placed or formed, which meeting the rounded or bevelled corner Operation.
The bagging (if bagging is, to be put on the bale) being spread upon the follower, the beam H, with the follower upon it, is lowered to the bottom of the box, and the box is then filled with the materialv to be pressed, which may be all put in at'the top, or a part put in at the sides, before they are closed.
When lled, the top is shut down, bagging, if employed, being iirst 'spread over the material, and the straps b placed over the ends of the beam G.
The journals of the traversing bar l may, at first, be placed in the seat 1t, and the pawls c and m being unhooked the lever yi is raised to allow the bar Z, with its pawl, to fall. The lever is then brought down to raise the bar l, and the pawl m, taking the rack e, raises thev rack with the bar, and, with the rack, the beam H, to which it is attached. The lever 'i is then again raised, the rack being held by the pawl c, but the bar l, with its pawl, falls, as before, to take a new hold upon the rack.
This operation being repeated at both ends of the press, the beam vH and the follower within the box are drawn upand thecontents of the box compressed.

W'hen the bale or package is partially compressed, and the resistance has increased so as to require greater power or purchase, the journals of the bar l may be moved (While the rack is held by the pawl c) into a seat on the lever i', nearer to its fnlerum, o1' to the link h', as k, to give a greater purchase for continuing or completing the compression.
The pressing of the bale being completed, the hinged sides of the box may be opened and bands or bagging, or both, secured upon the bale.
To release the bale, the bar l should be raised by the levers sufficiently to release the pawl c, and this pawl being hooked up the reverse motion of the levers Will lower the rack, so that it may be held and lowered at pleasure by means of the crank and pinion p.
The bale being thus released and removed, the follower may beagain lowered to the bottom of the box, as before, and the operation above described repeated.
l. I claim the combination and arrangement of the straps b, stands a, hooks g, and pawls c, held bythe links d, substantially as described.
2.l In combination With the racks e, I claim the traversing-bars l, provided with projections or perforated lugs u, for the racks to traverse in, and with depending ends or journals to it the seats lo k in the working-levers i', substantially as described.
3. In combination with the racks e and traversingbars l, I claim the looking-pawls rm., hung or hinged upon said bars, substantially asA described.
4. In combination With the racks e and traversingbars Z, I also claim the levers e' and i', hinged together and connected to the stand u by the links h h', substantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In combination with the slides J, for closing the openings in the press-box, I claim the inclined planes t, on the follower beam, for pressing back said slides as the beam rises, substantially as described.
